The 90’s rock icon has died just days after announcing that he was suffering from a malignant brain tumor.
Jennifer Finch, bassist for the alternative rock band L7, has passed away at the age of 59, the band announced on social media today.
“We are shocked to announce the passing of our partner, sister, daughter and friend, Jennifer Precious Finch,” the statement read.
“Jennifer’s impact on the world of music was shocking. Her impact on our lives was even greater. We appreciate everyone’s attention and interest. We appreciate all the kind messages. We appreciate the space to privately heal during this difficult time.”
It was just four days ago that Jennifer Finch publicly revealed that she was battling an aggressive brain tumor, and fellow ’90s rockers and fans rallied to support her as she underwent multiple surgeries to treat the disease.
Finch was scheduled to join his bandmates on the seminal band’s “The Last Hurray” farewell tour later that year.
But the multidisciplinary artist, who is also known for her photography and writing, said she had suffered “serious complications” due to her condition.
In a post that set up a GoFundMe to support her ongoing treatment, her loved ones shared that despite hopes that early treatment, including radiation therapy, would be successful, the bassist has suffered a “relentless series of setbacks.”
“After the diagnosis, there was hope that treatment would allow her to return to a normal life,” the Instagram post said.
“Instead, complications have resulted in multiple surgeries and an unrelenting series of setbacks. Jennifer now lives with significant physical limitations and requires a level of care around the clock that love, friendship, and sheer determination alone cannot safely provide.”
“So we’re calling on the community.”
Fellow rockers like Garbage, Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna and Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament are among the thousands of fans who have rallied to support the fundraiser, which is on track to reach its $350,000 goal.
Despite the health crisis, Mr Finch appeared to be in good spirits as loved ones shared a photo of the esteemed rocker showing off his surgical scars from his hospital bed.
Finch’s L7 bandmates Donita Sparks, Susie Gardner and Demetra Plakas said they encouraged Finch to continue with his Last Hurley tour, which begins in October with its final U.S. dates.
“The Last Hooray Tour was planned with Jennifer when all four of us were healthy and well,” the band shared on their social channels.
“While Jennifer will not be able to participate in our upcoming U.S. tour, she has asked us to continue with the tour as scheduled.
“We will respect her wishes while making her care and health our immediate priority.”
He added: “Jennifer is part of our family. We love her and we want her to feel the full strength of the community that has loved and supported her over the years.”
The pair later revealed that Finch was encouraged by the outpouring of love and support from fans around the world and “really enjoyed” the messages being read to him.
L7, who last toured Australia at the Good Things Festival in 2024, were pioneers of the 90s grunge and riot group movement, along with bands such as Nirvana and Bikini Kill.
They rose to the mainstream charts with their 1992 hit “Pretend We’re Dead,” but by 2001 their chart fortunes had declined and the band declared an “indefinite hiatus.”
L7 reunited in 2014 and have been touring regularly ever since, playing their own shows and appearing in festival line-ups across the UK, Europe, the US and Australia.
