Nia DaCosta is set to direct the first two episodes of Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming series Sex Criminals. She will also serve as an executive producer on the project.
The series, based on Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s comic book series of the same name published by Image Comics, stars Imogen Poots as Suze, who is described as “an ordinary girl who has the special ability to stop time when she has sex. One night, she meets John (John Reynolds), who also has the gift. And they do what any other couple who stops time while having sex would do: rob a bank.”
DaCosta is best known for his film career, where he wrote and directed the films Hedda (2025), Marvels (2023), Candyman (2021), and Little Woods (2018). In 2026, she directed “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” In television, DaCosta directed episodes of “Top Boy” and “Ms. Marvel.” She is repped by CAA, Entertainment 360, Casarotto Ramsay & Associates, Shelter PR, Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein Lezcano Bobb & Dang.
Sex Criminals was created by Emily V. Gordon, Kumail Nanjiani, and Tse Chu, who also serve as showrunners. In addition to DaCosta, executive producers include Gordon, Nanjiani, Chu, Dani Melia of Gordon and Nanjiani’s Winter Coat Films banner, and Dani Gorin of LuckyChap, Fraction, and Zdarsky. LuckyChap’s Louie Hayes is the producer. The eight-episode series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
News of DaCosta’s hiring was announced ahead of Amazon’s presentation to advertisers at Upfront in New York City. The company also announced the green light for a new series called “Reality Retreat” and the renewal of “Reacher” for a fifth season.
