Women have made historic profits in Hollywood, accounting for 36% of TV show creators in the 2024-2025 season streaming.

According to a report by Boxed In on women’s representation on television, that figure is the highest ever for female television creators, starting from 27% in 2023-2024. On broadcast television, women accounted for 20% of creators. This has remained stagnant since last year. Taking into account both broadcast and streaming platforms, women accounted for 27% of creators from 2024 to 2025, an increase of 4% from the previous year.

Additionally, 32% of directors working on the streaming program are women, up from 23% in 2023-2024. This year, only 18% of the directors of the broadcast program were women. In fact, women took on more behind the scenes roles in streaming and full-scale broadcasts, including writers (34% streaming, 27% broadcast), editors (33% streaming, 17% broadcasting), and photo directors (10% streaming, 3% broadcasting).

The study found that programs with at least one female creator were dramatically adopted with more female directors, writers and editors than programs with only male creators. On shows with at least one female creator, women accounted for 42% of directors, 62% of writers and 32% of editors. In a program that only has male creators, women account for 20% of directors, 20% of writers and 20% of editors.

This television season also saw an increase in the proportion of major female characters, streaming from 44% in 2023-24 to 49% in 2024-25, and aired from 45% to 47%.

The “Box-in” project, written by Dr. Martha M. Lausen, claims to provide the longest-running historical record of women’s employment on television.
