Paramount Pictures’ upcoming “Call of Duty” movie from writer Taylor Sheridan is based on the “Modern Warfare” games from the Xbox-owned first-person shooter series.
Plot details for the film have been kept secret since it was first announced in September 2025, but Call of Duty in Culture Panel, promoting October’s release of Modern Warfare 4, was held at Fanatics Fest in New York on Saturday. Peter Berg, director and co-writer of the “Duty” film, took to the stage and revealed to fans that the film will be set in the “Modern Warfare” universe.
Since the original game was released in 2003, the Call of Duty series has grown to include more than 30 mainline games. Among the dozens of titles from various developers over the years are the Modern Warfare games, all now part of Xbox’s acquisition of publisher Activision. The Modern Warfare storyline, which began with 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, was the first Call of Duty game to break away from the series’ original World War II setting.
The Modern Warfare game was primarily set in the Middle East and followed the mission of Captain John Price and his Task Force 141 team to defeat terrorist Vladimir Makarov. The story continues with Modern Warfare 4, which will be released in the fall and will feature a war erupting between North and South Korea.
Last month, Paramount Pictures set a June 30, 2028 release date for the currently untitled movie “CoD,” which it is co-producing with publisher Activision.
When the Call of Duty movie deal was first announced by Paramount’s new owner Skydance last year, sources told Variety that the focus was on a single Call of Duty film by screenwriter Taylor Sheridan, but the multi-year deal included the possibility for Paramount to expand the Call of Duty universe into film and television.
