You can read all about the snubs and surprises of this year’s Emmy nominations here, but executives spoke to Page Six Hollywood behind the scenes yesterday about how the quality of the FYC panel will determine the show’s chances.
One awards professional said, “There are people who put on good shows but can’t do a good campaign and rely on celebrity hosts, and that backfires. I think people really underestimate those panels.”
After witnessing the awkward FYC panel, the source added, “(I) knew ‘Half Man’ was a mess.” “There is skill in these things, and smart companies know that and can get nominations.”
HBO’s “Half Man” stars series creator Richard Gadd alongside Jamie Bell, Stuart Campbell, and Mitchell Robertson. However, despite the show being expected to be a contender for prestigious awards, not only was Gad (Baby Reindeer) nominated for Best Supporting Role, but the project was abandoned.
Another source was particularly excited about “The Pit’s” numerous nominations yesterday.
“When multiple people appear in the same program category, things get really shaken up because voters could go for one person or they could split their votes and a third candidate could emerge victorious,” the source said. “This is inside baseball, which I love to watch!”
The Pit received a whopping 25 nominations, including two for guest actors who ran their own campaigns without help from HBO.
Brittany Allen, who played a woman dying of cancer, and Jeff Kober, who played another character with a serious diagnosis, were both nominated for guest star for the film.
However, this isn’t the first time the HBO actor has taken a grassroots approach. Alfie Allen, Gwendoline Christie and Carice van Houten all applied and received nominations for the final season of Game of Thrones in 2019.
