Parallax Films has joined as the global sales agent for the Singaporean wuxia sci-fi feature film “The House on the Moon,” which is set to have its world premiere in international competition at the 79th Locarno Film Festival.
The company holds exclusive rights across most international territories. Parallax also has non-exclusive rights in other parts of Southeast Asia, although German-speaking countries, Taiwan and Singapore are excluded from its exclusive rights.
Directed by Nelson Yeoh and co-written by Yeoh and Vicky Yang, “The House on the Moon” combines science fiction with the Chinese tradition of wuxia stories, based on the Chinese mythology of the moon goddess Chang’e and the legendary archer Hou Yi. It is Singapore’s first wuxia feature film and the country’s first feature film produced using virtual production technology.
Director Yeo previously premiered his feature debut Dreaming & Dying at Locarno in 2023, which became the first Southeast Asian film to win both the Golden Leopard Award at the Filmmakers of the Present Competition and the festival’s Best Feature Award.
“Returning to Locarno with ‘The House on the Moon’ feels like the stars have aligned. A few years ago it felt like reaching for the moon, and that’s what we did,” Yeoh told Variety. “I’m so grateful to my amazing cast and crew for embarking on this journey with me and making my childhood dream come true. I can’t wait to share this film with audiences around the world.”
The ensemble cast includes Lim Xi-an as Zhang Ah, Dominic Rustam as Hou Yi, Akira Huang as Nanyang Bandit, Harry Chan as Peng Meng, Li Kang-sheng as Yue Lao, and Doreen To as Ying Yuan.
The film is produced by Tan Si En, Wendy Lie and Kuek Shee Heng for Momo Film Co and Aview Images, part of Fremantle, with co-producers Weydemann Bros., 9LB Film and KawanKawan Media. Funding was provided by Taiwan Creative Content Authority (TAICCA) and supported by Singapore Film Board Vice President Grant.
