It was first reported that the show was in production in October 2024, with Amazon officially greenlighting eight episodes to air in April 2025.

The series has been described as a reinvention of King’s novel. The official logline reads, “Social misfit high school student Carrie White (Summer Howell) lives with her fiercely protective mother Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). After her father’s sudden and untimely death throws her into the unforgiving environment of a public high school, Carrie is forced to deal with a viral bullying scandal tearing her community apart, the school’s relentless pressure and casual cruelty, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that grow with her adolescence. ”
In addition to Howell and Sloian, the cast includes Sienna Agdon as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Woollett as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Talia Dudek as Emmaline, Amber Midthunder as Ms. Desjardins, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grail.
Flanagan is a writer, executive producer, showrunner, and directed four episodes of Carrie. King is also an executive producer, with Amazon MGM Studios producing.
Flanagan has become one of the most influential voices in the horror genre in recent years. He has received considerable praise for his work on the Netflix TV shows “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Midnight Mass,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” as well as films such as “Doctor Sleep” (itself an adaptation of King’s “The Shining” sequel) and “Gerald’s Game,” an adaptation of another King novel. Most recently, Flanagan adapted Dr. King’s 2020 novel The Life of Chuck into a film starring Tom Hiddleston.
“Carrie” is King’s first novel and was originally published in 1974. The book was a bestseller and was later made into a film starring Sissy Spacek in 1976. The film, directed by Brian DePalma, reportedly grossed over $30 million on a budget of less than $2 million. It is widely cited as one of the greatest horror films of all time.
