Prince Harry has revealed the “lovely” way he and his family, including wife Meghan Markle, son Prince Archie, 7, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 5, celebrated his late mother Princess Diana’s birthday. It was a special reward.
“Yes, I’ll do a lemon drizzle cake,” Harry, 41, said while answering questions at Scotty’s Summer Festival at Maxstoke Castle in Warwickshire on Saturday. This was his last public appearance during his visit to the UK.
“I think tradition is really, really important,” he added. “Especially when it’s sweet.”
The princess, who died at the age of 36 in a car accident in Paris in August 1997, was supposed to have celebrated her birthday earlier this month, as her birthday was July 1st.
In April, Prince Harry cited his mother’s tragic death as the main reason he initially didn’t want to work for the royal family.
Prince Harry, who was 12 years old when Princess Diana died, claimed that Diana was “killed” by her work as a royal and that he did not want to suffer the same fate.
“I thought, ‘I hate this job. I hate this role. I hate wherever this goes,'” the Duke of Sussex said.
“I was so against it and stuck my head in the sand for years and years,” he said.
But the Spare author was prompted to change his mind about stepping down from royal duties (which he later did in 2020) after being reminded that he could use his privilege to “make a difference in the world”.
“And what does mom want me to do?” he added about Diana. “And it really changed the way I saw myself.”
In 2021, Prince Harry reflected on his experience losing a parent at an early age, saying it left a “big hole inside of me” in the foreword for a children’s book he wrote for children who lost a parent during the coronavirus pandemic.
“I lost my mother when I was young. I didn’t want to believe it at the time, I didn’t want to accept it, and it left a huge hole inside me. I know how you feel, but I want to assure you that over time, that hole will be filled with so much love and support. We all deal with loss differently, but it was said that when a parent goes to heaven, their spirit, their love, and their memory will not. They will always be with you and you can hold them forever.” I think this is true. ”
“You may feel lonely, you may feel sad, you may feel angry, you may be in a bad mood. These feelings will pass eventually. And I promise you, when you are ready to talk about those feelings, you will feel better and stronger,” the prince concluded.
