Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry took their children Lilibet and Archie to meet King Charles this afternoon. Over the past week, it has been unclear whether Meghan, Archie and Lilibet will join Prince Harry in the UK due to safety concerns. It will be the first time the children have returned to the UK since July 2022, and the first time Meghan has returned to the UK since September 2022.
Meghan Markle, Lilibet and Archie will return to the UK today to join Prince Harry to meet King Charles and Queen Camilla, Town & Country & People has confirmed. It will be the first homecoming for Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, since the family attended the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in July 2022. This will be Meghan Markle’s first return home since the Queen’s funeral in September 2022.
Charles and Camilla hosted them at his private residence, Highgrove House, in Gloucestershire.
No other details about the afternoon meeting were released.
Today, People magazine confirmed that Duchess Meghan will not be attending Prince Harry’s Invictus Games event in Birmingham. The family has been vacationing in Europe since late June, but it was unclear whether Meghan and her children would visit the UK due to security concerns.
Last week, Prince Harry’s representatives issued a statement following reports that he was reconsidering taking his family to his home country due to lack of police protection outside the royal residence.
The spokesperson said: “Prince Harry’s program in the UK includes both public and private initiatives across the country. Safe accommodation is just one element of an effective protection and safety plan, as risks are associated with individuals, not places.”
“Accommodation has never been an issue,” the spokesperson added. “The question is whether adequate and proportionate protection is provided throughout the visit.The independent risk management committee that RAVEC (the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royal Family and Public Figures, which determines who is entitled to police protection and to what extent) itself deemed it necessary in November last year, has not yet convened. It is therefore difficult to see how the proportionality of the current arrangements can be ensured without that independent assessment.The Duke continues to explore all available options to ensure that the visit can proceed safely and give his children the opportunity to enjoy the UK. ”
