Just over a month after debuting at the Met Gala wearing Balenciaga, Blue Ivy Carter is showing off a more casual side of her style.
The 14-year-old was photographed in New York City accompanying her father Jay-Z to his ‘Reasonable Doubt Jay Z30’ pop-up. For the occasion, she wore an oversized head-to-toe look, a world away from the sculptural haute couture she wore on fashion’s biggest night.
Taking an unexpected approach to summer dressing, Blue Ivy paired a gray Fear of God Essentials MLB hoodie with Jaded London’s LDN Mud XL Colossus Jeans, whose exaggerated wide-leg shape layered over chunky black shoes. A blue shoulder bag, black rectangular glasses, gold jewelry, and very long braids completed the outfit.
Her latest look arrives just days after her mother, Beyoncé, shared the sweet story behind Jay-Z’s own long hair in a video for Cécred. Beyoncé said, “I always thought it was beautiful that the real reason Jay grew his hair long was to show Blue that her hair was similar to his.”
“Let’s rewind and give you the backstory,” Beyoncé explained. “Our daughter was about 5 years old and she wasn’t very confident with her hair at the time. When she told her dad about it, it inspired Jay to grow it out. We wanted our daughter to love and embrace every inch of her gorgeous curls.”
Blue has steadily become one of the most interesting young brands to watch in the fashion industry. Earlier this spring, she made her Met Gala debut alongside Beyoncé in a bubble-hem white dress by Balenciaga layered under a dramatic coat. It was a very different vibe from Thursday’s oversized separates, but showed the same willingness to experiment with silhouettes.
Speaking to Vogue at the celebration, Beyoncé reflected on sharing this moment with her daughter. “It feels surreal to have my daughter here. She’s so beautiful. I can’t believe I get to share that with her. I think she’s just incredibly beautiful,” he said, adding, “She was ready. She’s ready.”
