The first trailer for Taika Waititi’s dystopian sci-fi movie Clara and the Sun, starring Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams, and Natasha Lyonne, has been released.
The film is based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s New York Times bestseller of the same name and tells the story of Clara (Ortega), a robot designed to prevent loneliness. A mother (Adams) buys a robot for her daughter Josie (Mia Talia), who is suffering from a mysterious illness.
Alan Murphy (son of “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy) and Steve Buscemi round out the film’s cast.
Sony’s 3000 Pictures acquired the film rights to Ishiguro’s novel in July 2020, and it was announced in March 2021 that Darvi Waller would write the script. Ishiguro will serve as executive producer.
David Heyman, Garrett Basch, and Waititi of Heyday Films served as producers on the film. Elizabeth Gabler and Aislinn Dunster are directing the project for Sony’s 3000 Pictures.
The novel is set in the United States in the near future and is told from the perspective of Clara, an artificial friend powered by solar energy. Another of Ishiguro’s novels, Never Let Me Go, was made into a film in 2010 starring Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, Keira Knightley, and Ella Purnell.
Ortega’s recent film credits include A24’s dark comedy Death of a Unicorn, co-starring Paul Rudd, The Weeknd’s Tomorrow, and the Sundance premiere of The Gallerialist, co-starring Natalie Portman. Season 2 of her Netflix hit Wednesday premiered last year, and season 3 is currently in production.
“Clara and the Sun” will be released in theaters on October 23rd.
