With the Canary Islands’ audiovisual sector making active inroads into the international documentary scene, a collective of producers, directors and creative executives are helping to define what Canary Island production means: locally rooted, diverse, outward-looking and highly exportable.

Variety magazine profiles some of the Canary Islands’ most important figures.

david bote

Few Spanish non-fiction filmmakers enjoy the breadth and longevity of David Bote. His Tingrad film label was founded over 200 years ago. The Canary Islands-born director moves fluently between observational documentary, climate advocacy filmmaking and, most notably, traditional animated feature film, with The Black Butterfly winning the Goya Prize, Platino Prize, and Oscar nominations after its 2024 Annecy premiere. His environmental documentary “Climate Exodus” won the Green Spike in Seminchi, Valladolid. His latest film, Benigno, was shot entirely at Super 8 in his hometown of Garachico and will make its world premiere in Shanghai in 2026. As a producer, he brought “Sugar Island” to Venice. Current titles also include “Tres Balas” (in production), “Human Object” (in pre-production) and “Cathaysa” (documentary/animation hybrid in development). Located between Europe, Africa, and Latin America, the archipelago produces a narrative shaped by challenges of migration, identity, territory, and environment. “For documentary filmmakers, this is more than just a filming location; it’s first and foremost a storytelling location,” says Bothe.

Luis Luque Oliva

Since co-founding Las Hormigas Negras in 2013, Luis Luque Oliva has built one of the most important production operations in the Canary Islands, consistently working on documentaries, fiction, television formats and advertising, often dealing with questions of identity and ethnography close to his creative center. His flagship work, Insulae, a 13-episode documentary history of the Canary Islands, won the Regional Pubcasters Association’s Perro Sarasola Award for Best Regional Television Program in 2024. FORTA is currently in its second season. Luque, a Seville journalism graduate, is also president of La Plataforma de la Tele, an association that groups Seville’s main television production companies.

Cesar Armas Morales

Having been at the helm of television projects for more than 20 years, journalist and documentary director César Armas Morales has established himself as one of the Canary Islands’ most persistent representatives of non-fiction broadcasting. His work is transmitted all over the world. “The Last Volcano” aired on Movistar+, RAI Italy and Axess TV in Sweden. “Erased from the Map” appeared in TV3’s famous “Sense Ficció” series. His latest film, “Finland, The Happiest Country,” was made for several weeks and became one of the most-watched documentaries on Movistar+ in 2025. Fragile Islands, an environmental feature that spans the Maldives, the Philippines and Colombia, is currently in pre-production as Armas moves forward with his most internationally ambitious project to date.

Agustina Giorgi

At 24 years old, Giorgi represents an urgent need for the audiovisual sector in the Canary Islands. It is young creative talent coming from neighboring fields and recalibrating the way production is rooted in the island. Trained at Gran Canaria’s School of Fine Arts and Design, she spent her early career in branding and visual communications before joining Wakai to create the visual identity for the FC Barcelona Femeni documentary, a project distributed globally on ESPN and Disney+. Wakai describes her “ability to combine aesthetic sensibilities, strategic thinking, and a unique creative voice to build powerful, emotionally resonant brand worlds.”

Estefania Martin

As Production and Project Development Director at Grupo Macaronesia, Estefanía Martín quietly occupies an important place in the Canary Islands’ audiovisual ecosystem. A communications and audiovisual production specialist with extensive experience across television content, documentaries, organizational campaigns, and strategic communications, she has spent her career turning complex, multi-stakeholder projects into high-impact deliverables for governments, businesses, and institutions at local and national levels. With a focus on designing efficient production strategies and fostering new opportunities in the sector, she is located at the intersection of creative development and industrial infrastructure, exactly the combination required by the archipelago’s growing ambitions.

Chas Barrera

Chas Barrera, a Canary Island-based filmmaker who has worked in documentary and television for more than 20 years, represents the quietly essential figure who keeps the region’s film culture going during its more visible peaks. His career began in 2003 with “Europa, ¿Paraíso o Espejismo?” Co-produced with Pedro Almodovar’s El Deseo, this is the first in a trilogy about immigration that continued with Jarama and Segunda Tierra, which won audience awards for both Docupolis and Miradas Doc. In 2012, he co-founded Sirocco with Pablo Barrio. His most awarded film, Los Días que Vivimos (2023), a 120-minute story about the La Palma volcanic eruption and its human impact, won Best Film at the Wildlife Vasa Festival in Finland, Best Documentary at Madrif, Spain, and Best Feature at MIWEFF, India. His documentaries have been broadcast on France Television, RAI, Al Jazeera, and Prime Video. He currently serves as Head of Production at Videre.
