Robert Downey Jr. can’t say much about the upcoming Marvel movie Avengers: Doomsday, in which he returns to the series as the villainous Doctor Doom, but he assures comic book movie fans that the film will live up to the hype. In an interview with CBR alongside co-director Joe Russo, the Oscar winner said the film “landed where I think it’s more than enough” for fans.
“And it doesn’t even matter how I did it,” Downey added. “It’s about the structure of this film and the other characters. There’s something going on after Doomsday that is literally the only antidote. After Infinity War and Endgame, how do these movies not let you down?” And we’ve worked long and hard to break that. ”
Of course, Downey couldn’t reveal what “Doomsday” or “Avengers: Secret Wars” was about. Director Joe Russo said there are “a lot of surprises” in the new film, adding, “I think[Doomsday]is the most emotionally complex of all the movies. And in many ways, the most mature of all the movies.”
“We are incredibly grateful to both of them,” Downey said. “One epic at a time. ‘Doomsday’… Just gratitude for being able to do it. Staying involved with people who are critical when we fail, but understand how difficult it is when we do well.”
Downey played the superhero Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before making his villainous debut in Doomsday. The character was exited in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, and Marvel’s run has been rocky since then, with blockbusters (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Deadpool vs. Wolverine) and failures (The Marvels, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumia).
“Avengers: Doomsday” is produced by Disney and Marvel Studios and will be released in theaters on December 18th.
