Production is underway on a new documentary, “Mi Familia: Sen Dog and the American Dream,” chronicling the life and career of Cypress Hill co-founder Senen “Sen Dog” Reyes.
According to the official logline, “Mi Familia” tells “the untold story of Sen’s American dream, from his family’s poor origins in Cuba to the gang streets of South Central Los Angeles and hip-hop superstardom, and how they… It details how they survived a new nightmare in the 1980s when their adopted home of South Los Angeles was overrun by gang violence, and the extraordinary series of events that led to Cypress Hill.
Participants in the doc include hip-hop and rock icons such as B-Real, Slash, Chuck D, DMC, George Clinton, will.i.am, Emilio Estefan, Pitbull, and DJ Matt Pinfield.
“‘Mi Familia’ is a truly unique experience that reconnects me with my Cuban roots and the musical heritage of our family that spans generations,” said Reyes. “It also brings me closer to so many music icons who have helped break down barriers and fuse genres and cultures, and I’m so honored to be able to feature them throughout my journey in this film.”
Reyes co-wrote and produced “Mi Familia” with Christina Bunker of Freedom Village Films. Director Christian Jean also co-wrote the doc and is a producer under his Bon Accord Picture Company banner. Sam Okun will serve as executive producer.
Reyes debuted in 1991 as the iconic rap collective Cypress Hill with B-Real (Louis Freeze) and producer DJ Mags (Laurence McGarrad). Then, in 1994, percussionist Eric “Bobo” Correa joined. The group was a staple of the West Coast hip-hop scene in the late ’80s and ’90s, known for their aggressive, bass-heavy sound and unapologetic affinity for smoking weed. Reyes is also the founder of metal bands SX-10 and Powerflo.
Reyes and Cypress Hill represent The Team and Primary Wave. Freedom Village Films and Bon Accord Picture Company are represented by Rosen Law Group. Okun is repped by CAA and Lathem & Watkins, along with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.
