The local action-horror film “Colony” maintained its stronghold at the Korean box office during the weekend of May 29th to 31st.
According to data from KOBIS, a tracking service run by the Korean Film Council, the film earned $6.7 million in its second slot from 971,011 admissions, securing a 56.67% share of the weekend market. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, the film depicts a highly adaptive mass mental infection within a shopping mall. The film has grossed $24.7 million since its release on May 21st, with 3,474,904 total admissions.
Hollywood horror film “Backrooms” debuted in second place, earning $2.1 million from 303,247 admissions over three days. The film has collected a total of $2.7 million since its release on May 27th.
Biographical music drama “Michael” took third place, collecting $993,075 from 136,682 weekend tickets, pushing South Korea’s lifetime box office revenue to $10.2 million with 1,394,934 admissions.
The Mandalorian and Grogu opened in fourth place with 77,048 attendees and $638,763. Including mid-week screenings, the film grossed $940,742.
The fantasy comedy “The Supernatural Sweet Shop” debuted in fifth place with $358,935 from 58,474 admissions. The live-action version of the popular children’s series has grossed $373,516 since its May 29 release.
“Super Mario Galaxy Movie” moved into sixth place, grossing $170,548 over its three-day slot and totaling $10.3 million. The sports drama “Wild Thing” came in seventh place with $94,044 in pre-release screenings, bringing its preliminary gross to $124,472.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 came in 8th place, earning $87,049 from 11,980 attendees over three days, for a total of $10.6 million.
Rounding out the bottom of the top 10 is the meta-comedy “Nirvana the Band: The Show the Movie” in 9th place, adding $80,047 for a total of $346,182, and the Japanese anime “Anpanman: Baikinman to Picture Book Lurun” in 10th place, adding $50,147 for a total of $166,293.
The overall market total for the weekend was $11.9 million, down from $13.1 million the previous week.
