Independent Film Company (formerly IFC Films) has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to Georgia Bernstein’s feature debut “The Night Nurse,” which premiered at Sundance earlier this year.
Scheduled for release on July 10, this psychosexual thriller explores the dark side of caregiving. The film, whose cast includes Bruce McKenzie (Breaking Bad), Mimi Rogers (Ginger Snaps) and Kamle Paksoy (The Affair), depicts a retirement community that is torn apart by a series of fraudulent phone calls, as a nurse (Paksoy) becomes entangled with a mysterious patient (Mackenzie). Bernstein will direct from his own script.
“Georgia is an incredibly exciting talent whose debut film hooked us from the first frame,” Rachel Labes, director of Independent Film Company, said in a statement to Variety. “It’s rare to come across such bold, boundary-pushing filmmaking, so we’re excited to bring it to audiences this summer.”
“I couldn’t be more grateful to the team at IFC for championing ‘The Night Nurse’ and bringing it to theaters this summer,” Bernstein said in a statement. “They immediately understood the tone and provocation of this film. I feel very lucky to be working with a company that has long supported some of my favorite filmmakers.”
Producers include Bernstein, Edwin Rinker, Lian Cangjie, Veronica Barbosa, and Lucy Rogers. Labes negotiated the contract on behalf of Independent Film Company, and Gersh’s Jessica Lacey and Julien Levesque negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers. Bernstein is repped by Gersh and Entertainment 360.
Independent Film Company’s previous releases include “The Babadook,” “Midnight with the Devil,” “Snail Memoirs” and “Boyhood.”
