Backrooms, A24’s latest film and the directorial debut of 20-year-old Kane Parson, has already grossed more than $10 million in previews and is already expected to be a box office success.
The horror film, currently in theaters nationwide, stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Avan Jogia, and Rukita Maxwell, and follows a therapist who must enter a back room (a collection of liminal and eerie spaces originally inspired by 4chan memes) to find a missing patient.
But long before Backroom hit the big screen, Parsons was creating an eerie series of found footage-inspired YouTube videos of the same name. He was only 16 years old when he started making videos. This video follows a fictional group of researchers as they attempt to explore and study liminal space. Each video ranges in length from a minute and a half to 45 minutes and shows different parts of the undiscovered region in grainy footage. The 22 video web series has amassed more than 25 million views since its inception. Parsons’ account has more than 3 million subscribers.
Parsons co-wrote the script for the feature film with Will Sudic, known for writing episodes of Westworld, Ash vs. the Evil Dead, and Homeland.
Whether you want to get ready to see “Backrooms” in theaters or want to continue the spookiness after you’ve already seen the movie, the series is available to watch in its entirety on Parsons’ YouTube channel “Kane Pixels.”
