Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day has been released to the film press ahead of its June 12 release, with initial reactions calling the sci-fi UFO-focused film “Spielberg’s best film in 20 years” and praising star Emily Blunt.
Germain Lucier, senior entertainment reporter at Gizmodo, told X: “I loved Disclosure Day.” An intense roller coaster of a chase movie, love story, and mystery, all wrapped up in sci-fi wonder. This is Spielberg’s best film in 20 years, packed with all the magic that makes his films special, as well as one of the best characters/performances of all time by Emily Blunt. ”
Collider editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub agreed with Lucier, saying, “It’s not a shock to anyone, but Steven Spielberg has hit another huge home run with ‘Disclosure Day.’ I can go on and on about what I like, but I was lucky enough to go into this movie knowing almost nothing about it. I highly recommend everyone to watch it as well. Please stop watching the trailer. All I can say is that Emily Blunt is amazing. I know that summer blockbusters usually don’t have the kind of performances that get attention during awards season, but if people see what she does in this…
Film reporter Bill Breer also called the film “a riveting and moving piece of work,” highlighting the film’s “breathtaking structure, David Koepp’s X-FILES-meets-The Bible script, a tightrope walk, Emily Blunt’s most accomplished performance, and John Williams’ best score in years.”
“I cried at the end,” said Tessa Smith, a film and television reporter for Rotten Tomatoes. “‘Disclosure Day’ is just phenomenal! Something truly special,” Smith wrote. “I was captivated by everything that happened and was hanging on to every word. The score elevates every scene perfectly. Part mystery, part Twilight Zone, part completely new…amazing.”
The film’s official logline reads, “If you knew we weren’t alone, if someone showed you and proved it, would you be scared? This summer, the truth belongs to 7 billion people. We are… approaching ‘Disclosure Day.'”
Blunt plays a Kansas City TV meteorologist who is suddenly attacked by a mysterious extraterrestrial force while recording a live weather segment, while Josh O’Connor co-stars as an extraterrestrial believer determined to reveal the truth about extraterrestrials to the world. Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Coleman Domingo, Wyatt Russell and Henry Lloyd-Hughes round out the cast.
Spielberg developed the story with screenwriter David Koepp, with whom he has previously collaborated on the films Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Disclosure Day is Spielberg’s 37th film. The author’s filmography is packed with films such as Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds, as well as high-profile sci-fi titles such as Close Encounters, E.T., Minority Report, AI and Ready Player One.
