Let’s waste chocolate: ‘Grown Ups 3’ is officially in development at Netflix.
An Adam Sandler trilogy has long been rumored, with cast members David Spade and Kevin James hinting that the project is in the works. However, this announcement marks the first time that Netflix has officially acknowledged the status of the project.
At least five central characters from the series (Sandler, Chris Rock, Spade, James, and Rob Schneider) are rumored to be returning, but the streamer did not confirm any casting news.
“Grown Ups 3” will be directed by Kyle Newacheck, who directed Sandler and Netflix projects “Murder Mystery” and “Happy Gilmore 2.” Sandler co-wrote the screenplay with Tim Herlihy.
The original Grown Ups was released in 2010 and grossed $271 million worldwide, making it Sandler’s highest-grossing film outside of the animated Hotel Transylvania series. The 2013 sequel, Grown Ups 2, wasn’t far behind, grossing $247 million worldwide.
“Grown Ups” follows a group of lifelong friends who reunite with their families on a Fourth of July outing. The cast also included Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, Maya Rudolph, Joyce Van Patten, Colin Quinn, Steve Buscemi, and Tim Meadows.
Sander will produce “Grown Ups 3” along with Jackie Sandler, Jack Giaraputo and Herlihy. Kevin Grady and Judith Mohr will serve as executive producers.
The film is the latest project in Sandler’s 10-year partnership with Netflix. Under an agreement with the streamer that has been renewed multiple times, Sandler has produced streaming films such as Leo, Murder Mystery and Hubie Halloween, as well as sequels to classic films such as Happy Gilmore 2.
