David Allen Coe’s estranged daughter Tanya Montana Coe claims she was “not given the opportunity” to meet him before his death.
The country legend died on Wednesday at the age of 86, his representative confirmed, but the cause of death was not disclosed. After the news broke, Tanya made an emotional post on social media, writing about how she missed seeing her father for the last time.
“Waking up to the news that your dad has passed away and not being given the chance to see him one last time is a hell I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy,” she wrote.
She also said she had not been informed of her father’s funeral arrangements.
“If anyone knows about funeral arrangements, please let me know. I would like to attend my father’s funeral,” she wrote.
Tanya’s mother is David’s ex-wife Jodi Lynn Coe. He and Jody had four children: Tanya, Tyler, Shan, and Carson.
David was married five times before meeting his sixth wife, Kimberly Hastings Coe, whom he married in 2010.
In September 2025, Tanya, who is also a musician, revealed in an Instagram post that she had been estranged from her father “for quite some time.”
“My father disowned me, blamed it on Jody, and told me he was moving out of state, but he wouldn’t tell me where,” she claimed.
“He burst into tears…I don’t know if it was real or alligator, but he threw $200 at my feet, rolled down the limousine windows and drove off without a second glance,” she continued.
In the same post, she shared that she found out she has a half-brother who was born four and a half months after her.
“I’m processing a lot of family stuff, rn☮️❤️,” she wrote.
Tanya isn’t the only one of David’s children to be estranged. His son Tyler, who dropped out of high school at age 14 to join David on tour, told GQ in 2021 that he hasn’t spoken to him since 2013, when the “Take This Job and Shove It” writer fired David from the band and formed a new one.
“It wasn’t a relationship that existed before,” he told the media, not particularly upset by their rift. “It hurt, but it’s not a new pain.”
“I can probably count on one hand the number of helpful things my dad has said to me in life,” he added.
