James Gunn says DC’s prestigious movies are on pause

Director James Gunn, who is currently working on his Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, is still using Threads to keep comic book movie fans up to date on the ongoing DC Universe, but it looks like The Authority movies will no longer be included. At least not right away.

“The script wasn’t completely finished, but more importantly, it just didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU, both in terms of story and practical concerns. It might come someday, but not right away,” Gunn revealed about The Authority, one of 10 projects he and Peter Safran announced when they first announced plans for a new DC Universe in January 2023.

The Authority was a comic book series that started in 1992 and centered around a team of superheroes whose members took less-than-ideal approaches to saving the world. Popular characters included the Doctor, Swift, Midnighter, the Engineer, and Jack Hawksmoor, but Gunn did not reveal who would appear in the film.

When Gunn and Safran first announced The Authority in January 2023, they said the project was “currently in the works.” Safran described the team members as being “like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men.” They know, or at least believe, that you want them on your wall. ”

“This is not just a story of heroes and villains, and not every movie or TV show is a story of good guys versus bad guys,” Gunn said at the time. “There are some very suspicious people, like government officials, who fundamentally believe that the world cannot be easily solved. They take things into their own hands.”

In a new response to fans, Gunn revealed that he had no intention of writing or directing the film himself. The DC co-boss has been adamant in various interviews since taking over the studio that no DC movie will ever go into production until the script is fully developed and ready to shoot.

Gunn also confirmed in his latest update that two other projects announced in January 2023, Booster Gold and Paradise Lost, are “in development” and “in extreme development,” respectively. When a fan asked Gunn why it took over three years for these projects to get off the ground, Gunn, who reports directly to the screenwriter, reminded people that it’s standard procedure for “95% of the scripts and shows that get produced.”

Next up for the DC Universe is Supergirl, which opens on June 26th.
