‘Project Hail Mary’ will not be available immediately due to movie theater extensions

Are you looking forward to watching “Project Hail Mary” from home? Please wait. The film’s co-director Christopher Miller revealed to XPost that his blockbuster space adventure will “no longer be available for streaming” as Amazon MGM extends the film’s theatrical release. For the time being, the only way to see Ryan Gosling and Rocky team up is on the big screen.

“Yesterday, we announced that MGM is extending the exclusive theatrical release period for Project Hail Mary, which will no longer be available for streaming immediately,” Miller announced. “This is a movie that deserves to be seen on the big screen, and we’re returning fully to IMAX screens starting this weekend for one week only, so make your plans to see it in theaters now! Bring your friends and loved ones. It’s an experience you can share with others.”

Gosling headlines Miller and Phil Lord’s 2021 film adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, which centers on a schoolteacher-turned-astronaut tasked with stopping a mysterious entity from darkening the sun. Sandra Haller also stars in the film.

“Project Hail Mary” has made $517 million in theaters around the world since its release in March, making it one of the year’s biggest blockbusters. The film has been in U.S. theaters for just over a month now, which is usually when studios start making films available for viewing from home via PVOD platforms. For example, “Scream 7” hit PVOD 31 days after its theatrical release.

One of the encouraging trends that emerged from this year’s CinemaCon (where Amazon first announced the return of Project Hail Marys to IMAX screens) was Hollywood studios’ recommitment to maintaining theatrical release windows. Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has emphasized that future Paramount films will have a 45-day release window, while the recent release window for “Scream 7” was 31 days. Universal Pictures recently announced that its films will be released exclusively in theaters for five weekends in 2026 and seven weekends in 2027, before transitioning to home entertainment.

Yesterday, MGM announced that PROJECT HAIL MARY has extended its theatrical exclusive period and will no longer be available for streaming immediately. This is a movie you should see on the big screen – and it’s back in full on IMAX screens starting this weekend for one week only. https://t.co/suK8NYpgWM
