Turner Classic Movies has acquired exclusive rights to Beyond The Border: Latino Representation in Hollywood, a documentary film directed, written and produced by sister filmmaker duo Clara Cooperberg and Julia Cooperberg. The film is scheduled to be released on TCM in September during Hispanic Heritage Month.
The documentary “traces the centuries-long struggle for Latino representation, showing how artists reclaim their images, reshape cinema, and how we imagine the world,” and will feature archival and film clips, according to the film’s logline. Voices appearing in the film include John Leguizamo, casting director Carla Fuhr, Esai Morales, Jimmy Smits, Edward James Olmos, director Gregory Nava, director Patricia Riggen, Jose Zuniga, and more.
“As French filmmakers, we have been exploring American film and culture for over 20 years, and in some ways this film is part of a larger journey,” the Cooperbergs said. “What has always fascinated us is how Hollywood not only reflects society, but also shapes global perceptions of identity, power, and belonging. When it comes to representation of Latinos, we were struck by a paradox. Despite being a fundamental part of American history and culture and one of America’s largest communities, their presence in Hollywood has long been limited, stereotyped, or ignored. The gap between reality and representation felt shocking and urgent.”
The Cooperbergs have been making films together for more than 20 years and have written, directed, produced and edited more than 60 documentaries through Wichita Films. Their work was screened in Cannes by AMPAS and distributed worldwide on platforms such as HBO Max, Amazon, Hulu, and TCM.
Martin Meleur will serve as co-producer and Daniel Talbot will serve as executive producer. The film was produced by TCM Cinema and Wichita Film in association with Cali Pictures.
