Christopher North, a founding member of the rock band Ambrosia, has died. He was 75 years old.
The band acknowledged North’s heartbreaking death in a Facebook post on Monday.
“Dear Ambrosia fans, we celebrate the legendary life and career of our beloved family member, ‘Hammond B3 King’ Christopher North, whose sonic architecture defined generations of progressive rock and soft rock,” they wrote.
“A founding member since 1970, he was a keyboard wizard who brought unparalleled intensity and emotional depth to every performance,” the group added.
“We will always remember ‘Northwind’ for his fierce and ‘intense’ stage presence. The legend began when he was first discovered playing in a dimly lit room with a bottle of wine on his organ. ”
The band said North has “faced health challenges in recent years,” including a “valiant and successful” battle with throat cancer.
“His spirit was connected to music and the fans he loved,” they wrote.
“Christopher North’s work has created an ‘aural landscape’ that not only fills the airwaves, but also balances soulful, radio-friendly hooks and finesse,” Ambrosia added.
“We celebrate a true craftsman of the classic rock era, whose rich piano lines and soaring organ swells remain timeless.”
The band concluded the post, writing that North was “truly unique and truly loved by our fans and bandmates.”
“Rest in peace, Brother Chris, forever in our hearts,” they wrote.
North’s cause of death is unknown at this time.
Last October, Ambrosia co-founder, lead vocalist and guitarist David Pack revealed on Facebook that North was hit by a “vehicle speeding out of control while entering the restaurant.”
Pack, 73, said the guitarist was “fighting for his life” and urged fans to keep his bandmates in their prayers.
North formed Ambrosia in Los Angeles in 1970 with Pac, bassist Joe Puerta, and drummer Barley Drummond.
North was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2024. North’s fight against the disease was successful, but he was hospitalized again with pneumonia.
