Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes made an unexpected appearance together this week. During Gosling’s March 5 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Gosling surprised Mendes with a birthday celebration and brought them on stage in front of the audience in a rare joint moment.
Mendes was watching Gosling’s interview backstage, when he decided to throw the audience into a surprise. Before she came out, Ms. Gosling shared her plans and joked, “Here’s the thing: You might find me in the Hudson River tomorrow.”
When Mendez joined her on stage, she first addressed the teachers in the audience. “I love my teachers. We owe you so much. You’re all very poorly paid, but I’m so… so grateful. I had a lot of great teachers.”
She then turned to Fallon and playfully asked: “You’re going to cut all of this out, right?”
Addressing the audience again, Mendez continued, “I have had so many wonderful teachers mentor me, and I would like to express my gratitude to all of them.”
Gosling later revealed another surprise related to the celebration. “We actually have some band directors who are from North Bergen High School,” he said.
Fallon then introduced the performance, saying, “Please welcome the North Bergen High School marching band to play ‘Happy Birthday’ to Eva Mendes.”
A marching band entered the studio and performed “Happy Birthday” with Gosling singing alongside Mendes. After the celebration, Mendes thanked Gosling by kissing him on the cheek.
The appearance was a particularly rare public appearance for the couple, who have been together for years and have been dating since meeting on the set of the film The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011, but they also have two daughters and last appeared on a red carpet together in September 2012.
