The Indian film industry is gearing up for a once-in-a-generation reunion as film legends Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth are set to return to the big screen in a new feature film (currently titled ‘KHxRK’) produced by Red Giant Movies.
The project will be helmed by director Nelson Dilipkumar, who cemented his reputation as one of the most commercially formidable directors in Tamil cinema with his 2023 blockbuster The Jailer starring Rajinikanth.
The two icons shared the screen more than a dozen times in the late 1970s and early 1980s, starring in a string of Tamil film classics including ‘Apoorva Raagangal’, ‘Moondru Mudichu’, ‘Avargal’, ’16 Vayathinile’ and ‘Ninaithal Inikum’. Their last collaboration was in the 1979 fantasy film Allauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum, directed by IV Sarsi. Their last on-screen appearance was two years later in K. Balachander’s 1981 comedy Thiru Mul, in which Haasan appeared in a cameo at the film’s climax. The parting was mutual and amicable. As both actors rose to solo superstardom, they made a conscious decision to pursue separate paths.
A spokesperson for Red Giant Movies said, “Bringing together directors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth for this film is truly a dream come true for all of us at Red Giant Movies.” “We are deeply honored, grateful and incredibly excited to facilitate this reunion. This is a historic and emotional moment for Indian cinema, and we embark on this journey with immense gratitude and responsibility. We are committed to creating a cinematic experience that celebrates their legacy in the most powerful way.”
The music will be composed by Anirudh Ravichander, who frequently collaborates on large-scale productions in India and is known for his wide-ranging sonic approach. Director of photography is Rajiv Menon. Edited by R. Nirmal and art directed by DRK Kiran. Costume design is by Pallavi Singh and Amritha Ram, sound mix and sound design is by Suren G., and Alagiakoothan S. is co-credited for sound design. The film was co-produced by M. Shenbaga Moorthy and R. Arjun Durai.
Rajinikanth was last seen in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie (2025). Haasan’s latest film was ‘Thug Life’ (2025) directed by Mani Ratnam.
The film will be released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Further casting and production details are expected to be announced in the coming months.
