Buenos Aires-based Film Sharks announced that it has closed theatrical and remake rights to the morgue-set horror thriller “Torment” (“Torment”), directed by “Gimme the Power” director Olaro Rubio.

South Korea’s Entermode acquired theatrical rights, while Capelight acquired all rights for Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the UK.

“‘Tormento’ is doing very well in Mexico, and its strong storyline has led to international deals being closed ahead of its Berlin premiere,” said Guido Rudd of Film Sharks, who also owns the remake rights to the original 2019 film, “Morgue,” which the film is based on, and which he claims is based on true events.

“We are in advanced discussions about a U.S. remake of Morgue and some Asian versions,” Rudd said, adding that Vietnam’s Blue Lantern has an option for remake rights.

Natalia Sorian, best known for her star role in Michel Garza Cervera’s Tribeca Award-winning film Huessera, plays an insomniac security guard trapped in a morgue. Haunted by the guilt of running someone over and running away, she faces both personal and supernatural demons.

Packed with jump scares, “Tormento” also stars Jose Meléndez (“Crocodile”), Fernando Banda (“Zinnia”) and Dolores Espinoza.

FilmShark acquired worldwide rights to the horror pic last November, and TelevisaUnivision distribution company Videocine released it in Mexico the same month.

Rud and Sofia Teran of Filmsharks negotiated contracts with Maria del Mar Soberanes and Sofia Legarreta at Videocine. Rudd also serves as one of the film’s executive producers.

Torment was produced by Videocine and BH5 Studios, the producers of Guillermo Amoedo’s The Inhabitant.

According to the National Chamber of Film Industry Kanashin, the film ran for eight weeks, attracted 246,473 admissions, and grossed a whopping $976,187 (P16.6 million).

Kanashin reported that the box office revenue of Mexican films continued to rise, increasing by 14.8% year-on-year in 2025 and capturing a market share of 4.59%. In terms of admissions, Mexican films gained a 4.9% share, increasing from 8.4 million to 9.2 million in 2024. Last year’s romantic comedy “Mesa de Regalos” was the top grossing local film.
