The HBCU First LOOK Film Festival will be held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “Love & Basketball.”

The event will be held at Maybourne Beverly Hills on February 12th from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM Pacific Time and will include a reception and panel discussion exploring the film’s cultural impact on women’s sports.

CNN anchor Laura Coates will moderate the conversation, titled “25 Years of Love and Basketball: A Celebration of Women in Sports,” and will be joined by director Prince-Bythewood, star Sanaa Lathan, sports journalist Kari Champion, and broadcasting pioneer Jayne Kennedy, the first black female sportscaster on national television.

This movie kicks off NBA Week.

A panel discussion will examine how the legacy of the 2000 film connects to today’s increased visibility of women’s athletics in the WNBA, college sports, and media coverage. Prince-Bythewood’s film was added to the National Film Registry in 2023. Lathan’s portrayal of Monica Wright remains one of the most influential portrayals of black female athletes in film.

OWN will extend the celebration by airing “Love & Basketball” on February 14 as part of its Valentine’s Day weekend programming.

Sponsors include CNN, TNT Sports, Black Girl Vitamins, OWN, and Visit East Point. The HBCU First LOOK Film Festival returns Nov. 5-7 at Howard University.

Sony Pictures moves ‘The Breadwinner’ to Memorial Day weekend

Sony Pictures has announced a release date change for the family comedy “The Breadwinner,” moving TriStar Pictures from March 13 to May 29, positioning it for a lucrative Memorial Day weekend release.

The film marks the feature debut of comedian Nate Bergatze, who plays Nate Wilcox, a lifelong breadwinner forced into stay-at-home dad duties when his wife Katie (Mandy Moore) lands a big business deal on Shark Tank. Tasked with managing three young daughters with little parenting experience, Nate realizes that running a household may be his most difficult challenge yet.

The ensemble cast includes Colin Jost, Zach Cherry, Martin Hurley, Kate Berlant, Kumail Nanjiani, and Will Forte.

Directed by Eric Appel, written by Bargatze and Dan Lagana. Jeremy Latcham, Nate Bergatze and Dan Lagana will produce, with Joan Peritano, Michael Musgrave and Tyler Zacharias serving as executive producers.
