PROGRAMMING
Starz has acquired the exclusive U.S. rights to the five-part drama series “The Listeners,” starring Rebecca Hall, with plans to air the series later this year.
Based on the novel by Jordan Tannahill, who also adapted the screenplay, “The Listeners” is a psychological thriller directed by Janicza Bravo. The series originally premiered on BBC One in the U.K., where it received strong critical response. Hall stars as Claire, an English teacher whose life is disrupted when she begins hearing a mysterious low-frequency hum that no one else can hear, until one of her students reports experiencing the same phenomenon. As the two seek answers, they are drawn into a group that believes the sound is a gift rather than a curse.
The acquisition follows Starz’s recent pickup of the period drama “Amadeus” and continues the network’s strategy to expand its slate of premium programming aimed at women and underrepresented audiences. The company’s lineup includes original series such as “Fightland,” prestige acquisitions and established franchises including “Outlander” and the “Power” universe.
“The Listeners” is produced by Element Pictures, a Fremantle company, for the BBC. In addition to Hall, the cast includes Prasanna Puwanarajah, Mia Tharia, Gayle Rankin and Amr Waked. Fremantle handles global distribution.
