Indonesian director Joko Anwar has released the international trailer for his horror comedy Ghost in the Cell ahead of its world premiere in the Forum section of the Berlin Film Festival.
Set in an Indonesian correctional facility, the story follows inmates whose survival instincts are tested when a mysterious new inmate arrives, accompanied by a supernatural entity that preys on those with the darkest auras. As the death toll rises, incarcerated people realize that collective action may be their only way to survive.
“Beneath its supernatural surface lies something very real: the large-scale deforestation in Indonesia and how this destruction is too often silenced or ignored,” director Anwar said in a statement. “The ghosts in this film not only haunt our cells, but they also serve as reminders of the consequences we choose not to face.”
The film represents a new collaboration between Jakarta-based Come & Sea Pictures, Anwar and producer Tia Hasibuan through Rapi Films, South Korea’s Barunson E&A (the studio behind Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning Parasite), and Legacy Pictures. The ensemble cast includes Abhimana Aryasathiya, Lukman Sardi, Bronto Paralae, Aming, Rio Dewanto, Morgan Ooi, and Tora Sudiro.
Barunson E&A is handling worldwide sales for the project as part of a two-year agreement with Come and See Pictures.
The Indonesian-Korean co-production is scheduled to be theatrically released in Indonesia in the second quarter of 2026. The project represents the latest effort from Come & See Pictures, which recently distributed Netflix’s The Nightmares and Daydreams of Joko Anwar and Amazon MGM Studios’ The Siege at Thorn High.
