Who is Rumi Carter?
Rumi is the youngest daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z and was born in Los Angeles on June 13, 2017, along with her twin brother Sir. A month later, Beyoncé posted her first official photo of herself holding the twins, and their names were revealed with the caption, “Sir Carter and Rumi, one month today.”
Jay-Z later explained the inspiration behind the name in a 2017 interview with Rap Radar. “It was for my daughter because Rumi is our favorite poet,” he said, referring to the 13th-century Persian writer known for his works on themes of love, mysticism and spirituality.
As for Sir, “He just came out, Sir,” the rapper said at the time. “That’s how he carries himself.”
What do Beyoncé and Jay-Z say about her?
Although the parents don’t often talk about their twins publicly, they have given glimpses into Rumi’s upbringing over the years. Speaking to GQ in 2024, Beyoncé described parenting as “grounding and fulfilling.”
“Raising three children is not easy,” she added. “As children get older, they become their own people with unique needs, hobbies, and social lives. My twins are a gift from God. Parenting always teaches us about ourselves. It takes a lot of prayer and patience.”
Jay-Z echoed similar sentiments in a 2021 interview with The Sunday Times, saying his focus as a father was to create a “loving environment” for his children rather than a predetermined path. “We are just guides,” he said. “I think as long as your child feels supported and loved, anything is possible.”
What kind of personality is Rumi?
Rumi had a strong personality from the beginning, said her grandmother, Tina Knowles. “This girl is really going to rule the world,” Knowles told Us Weekly in 2019, explaining that she is the more dominant of the twins, while Sir is “laid-back and gentle, like her father.”
In 2022, Knowles told Oprah Daily that Rumi “loves fashion,” “has a great sense of style,” and is “very similar to Solange,” Beyoncé’s sister. “She knows what she wants,” Knowles added.

Knowles spoke further about Rumi in early May 2025, sharing footage of Rumi showing off her sister Blue on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour.
“Rumi came on stage with a small flower path prop 😭💅🏽,” Knowles wrote. “She said, ‘Oh, are we walking? Don’t say too much.’ It gives me energy for my big sister’s workout. 🥹 The way she watches Blue and mirrors her every move…you can tell she’s taking notes. She not only wants to add to that legacy, but she also wants to topple it! On her last tour, Rumi said she was ready to take the stage. She learned the choreography and was ready. Has Rumi ever worked on a Beyoncé project?
yes. Rumi has quietly appeared in her mother’s projects over the years, including the 2021 Ivy Park Children’s Collection campaign. She also appeared on Beyoncé’s 2020 visual album, Black Is King, alongside her sister Blue, mother, and grandmother, appearing in scenes celebrating multigenerational black women.
In 2024, Rumi made her musical debut on Beyoncé’s album Cowboy Carter. Her voice begins the song “Protector” with the short but memorable line, “Mommy, can I hear a lullaby?” With the release of this song, Rumi became the youngest female artist to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, according to Billboard.
Did Rumi perform on the Cowboy Carter Tour?
