David Letterman is standing behind his “good friend” Seth Meyers as President Donald Trump calls for the late-night host to be fired.
After being the subject of Meyers’ monologue on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” President Trump wrote in a Truth Social post last week (reposted by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr): : “NBC’s Seth Meyers is suffering from an incurable disease called Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS). Last night he was seen in an uncontrollable rage, probably due to the fact that his ‘show’ is a ratings show.” Disastrous. Aside from everything else, Myers has no talent. NBC should fire him immediately! ”
On a new episode of “The Barbara Gaines Show,” late-night veteran Letterman (who hosted NBC’s “Late Night” from 1982 to 1993 and then hosted CBS’ “The Late Show” until 2015) defended Meyers. “I’ve never been more proud of Seth Meyers,” he said. “Actually, it’s our old show. Yeah, we used to do that show, and he does a magical job.”
Letterman also referenced Trump’s response to a reporter’s question last week about the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia, saying, “But remember, Seth, things happen. You know what I’m saying?”
Later in the episode, Letterman called the Trump administration “just a marvel of stupidity” and said the president is “our dictator” and “isn’t going anywhere.”
“This is 18 times the worst behavior ever witnessed anywhere,” Letterman added of Trump. “Think of the worst things humans have ever accomplished. This is even worse.”
Meyers appears to be the latest target of President Trump’s Late Nights after repeated social media attacks on Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert. Kimmel’s show was suspended in September following pressure from the FCC after his comments about Charlie Kirk’s murder, but he returned a week later. Colbert’s “The Late Show” is scheduled to end in May 2026, but CBS insists this is a “purely economic decision” and not politically motivated.
