James Van Der Beek wore a Varsity Blues football jersey to raise money for other families going through the same battle as his cancer treatment.
“By popular demand! My favorite jersey. Maybe it was all about the fun plays they ran during the football sequences in away games…but I always loved wearing the varsity white shirt,” he wrote about the 1999 sports film on Instagram. “When we released the ‘Blues’ jersey last year, I was touched by the love and support I received from everyone. It means more than I can express. I hope you enjoy this jersey as much as I enjoyed the original. For me, every jersey I sign is a magical full-circle moment.”
Van der Beek is selling unsigned jerseys for $40 and autographed jerseys for $80 to raise money for colorectal cancer treatment and “other families walking the same path.” Earlier this month, the 48-year-old star began auctioning off “Dawson’s Creek” memorabilia to raise money. A year ago, he announced that he had been diagnosed with stage 3.
In September, the cast of Dawson’s Creek reunited for the first time since the show ended in 2003. Van der Beek was originally scheduled to attend, but had to withdraw due to gastritis. Lin-Manuel Miranda took over the role of Dawson instead. The event raised money for Van Der Beek’s treatment and for the F Cancer organization.
“Thank you for the love, prayers, support and for making this jersey mean so much more than the movie,” he wrote on Instagram. “I’m really grateful to everyone.”
