Season 5 of Stranger Things has already broken viewership records for the series before any new episodes were released.
All four seasons so far have cracked Netflix’s top 10 as fans rewatch or discover the sci-fi series ahead of its final episode on November 26th. This is the first time a Netflix series has charted for four seasons simultaneously.
For the week of Nov. 17-23, “Stranger Things” Season 1 was the No. 3 English series with 4.1 million views, followed by Season 4 in No. 5 with 3.3 million views. Season 2 came in 7th place, and Season 3 came in 9th place, but both seasons were tied for the number of views (with the title “Gabby’s Dollhouse” in 8th place) at approximately 3.1 million views.
Stranger Things Season 5 can certainly expect to set its own viewership record on Netflix when it cracks the top 10 next week, given the series’ status as one of the most important titles in Netflix history, and considering how long it’s been since fans have been waiting for a new installment. Season 4, released in 2022, was watched 140.7 million times in its first 91 days, making it the third most popular English-language series in Netflix history, and Season 3 in 2019 remained at No. 10 on the list until Wednesday Season 2 launched just a few months ago. (The series began in 2016 and was followed by a second season in 2017.)
In a first for a Netflix series, Stranger Things season 5 is also expected to be a box office success. After Part 1 of Season 5 was released on November 16th and Part 2 on Christmas Day, Netflix will release the series finale simultaneously on streaming and in theaters on New Year’s Eve.
For the week of November 17th to 23rd, the only things that topped Season 1 of Stranger Things in the Netflix Top 10 were “The Beast in Me,” which topped the chart in its second week with 14.1 million views, and Season 1 of the Amazon Prime Video series “Absentia,” which recently arrived on Netflix. Season 1 ranked second with 8.2 million views in its second week on the streamer. Season 2 of “Absentia” debuted between seasons 1 and 4 of “Stranger Things” and ranked fourth with 4 million views. And Season 3 of “Absentia” reached No. 10 on the charts with 2.3 million views.
The movie “Champagne Problems” stole the show in Netflix’s top 10 from November 17th to 23rd, debuting as the most-watched title overall with 20.5 million views.
