Minghella dated Lee Lezark, a member of the DJ collective Misshapes, in the mid-to-late 2000s. The two were photographed together at several events during that time, including the opening night of the Metropolitan Opera in 2006 and other star-studded events over the next two years. In 2007, they shared a kiss at an art party hosted by Whitney Contemporary, and in 2008 they attended Fashion Group International’s gala.

Not much is known about their relationship, but they appear to have broken up at some point before 2010, when Minghella moved on to another relationship.

According to Us Weekly, Minghella and Mara began dating in 2010 while filming the movie 10 Years. They dated for about four years, appeared at Hollywood events such as GQ’s 2010 “Men of the Year” party, and showed off some PDA during casual outings.

The two also attended the 2011 Screen Actors Guild Awards, where Minghella and her “Social Network” co-star were named Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture.

On August 29, 2014, Us Weekly confirmed that the two had broken up. “Max and Kate have broken up and gotten back together several times during their relationship, but things don’t seem to be working out this time,” a source told the magazine at the time. “The relationship ended on its own.”
Mara married one of Minghella’s best friends, Jamie Bell. In a 2018 Glamor interview, Minghella said of the trio’s dynamic: “I’ll tell you this, this is a beautiful part of my life. I see them every morning, and Jamie’s son is my godson. I understand why the optics are so confusing, but for us it’s not complicated.”
Years later, in 2023, actor Elliot Page published his memoir, Pageboy, in which he revealed that Mara had a secret affair with Minghella while they were dating. “The first person I fell in love with after my heartbreak was Kate Mara,” Page wrote in TODAY. He added that Minghella encouraged Mara to explore outside connections, but that ultimately did not work out.
The following year, Minghella and Mara reunited at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, where they attended to support their respective films Shell and Friendship.

Eve Hewson
Minghella was briefly linked to Irish actress Eve Hewson in 2015, and in July of that year, the Irish Independent published a photo of the two walking together in New York. However, they never publicly acknowledged their romance, and their reported romance was short-lived.

Minghella directed the 2018 film Teen Spirit, through which he met star Elle Fanning. A source told Us Weekly at the time that the pair first became romantically involved in July 2018, when they were spotted “holding hands in Florence, Italy.”
In early August, E! News shared a photo of the two getting together in London. A few weeks later, Us Weekly reported that Minghella and Fanning were spotted shopping at luxury department store Harrods in the British capital on separate days. “They seemed very relaxed and comfortable,” a source told Us Weekly. “They were very discreet and comfortable with each other, looking out for each other and chatting quietly when they were watching something together.”
In an April 2019 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Fanning and Minghella opened up about filming Teen Spirit, but remained mum about their romance. “I mean, we just really love working together,” Fanning said. “It was very special and he was a very good friend.”
Meanwhile, Minghella told the magazine that Fanning was “the only actress who could carry” the film. “It’s an incredible list of requirements. You have to be able to sing, you have to be able to dance, you have to be able to speak Polish convincingly, you have to do a British accent, you have to be able to play a wide range of ages and liven up the film with incredibly subtle acting,” he explained. “That’s a lot to do alone, but she handled everything with discipline and professionalism and never complained.”

The couple kept much of their relationship secret and rarely shared glimpses of their romance. In preparation for Halloween 2022, Fanning posted a photo on Instagram of the two of them dressed up as Chucky and Tiffany Valentine from Bride of Chucky. A few months later, they made a rare public appearance at the LA premiere of Minghella’s film Babylon.

By April 2023, the two broke up. Fanning confirmed the breakup in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, with the magazine stating that she is “currently single.” She told the magazine, “But I’m a hopeless romantic. I believe in love at first sight.” She added, “You might call me crazy, but I believe in such things. I feel like it’s my destiny.”
