As it prepares for a busy awards season, Mubi has hired veteran publicity executive VJ Carbone as vice president of U.S. communications.

In his role at Mubi, Mr. Carbone will oversee the promotion of the company’s U.S. film campaigns and the expansion of its U.S. presence. He will be based in the New York office and report to Sophie Rhatigan, Mubi’s senior vice president of global communications.

Mubi recently released “Die My Love,” a psychological thriller directed by Lynne Ramsay starring Jennifer Lawrence, co-starring Robert Pattinson, which received praise from critics for her shocking performance. The film had its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, has since been screened at film festivals around the world, and is now being touted by the movie as a strong contender in the awards race, particularly for Best Actress. Earlier this month, Mubi received nine Gotham Award nominations and 24 BIFA nominations (Akinola Davis Jr.’s “My Father’s Shadow,” released by Mubi, emerged as the frontrunner). The company also contributed to four major European Film Award nominees: Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, Oliver Lacks’ Silat, Marcia Silinski’s The Sound of Falling and Jafar Panahi’s It Was an Accident.

“We are excited to welcome VJ to Mubi,” said Rattigan. “His experience, reputation and passion for film make him a great addition to our team at a time when supporting strong independent storytelling is more important than ever,” the executive continued.

“I’m honored to be joining this remarkable movie team,” said Carbone, who most recently served as a consultant for Amazon MGM Studios, where she led campaigns for “Bones and All,” “Challengers” and “Boys in the Boat.”

“I’ve dedicated my career to championing great films and filmmakers, and I’m excited to bring my experience to my future work and help amplify the voices, projects, and visions that make Mubi special,” he continued.

Prior to his time at Amazon MGM Studios, Mr. Carbone spent a combined 14 years at Focus Features, working on titles such as Brokeback Mountain, The Constant Gardener, The Lost, Somewhere, Moonrise Kingdom and Downtown Abbey. He is the co-founder of the Asbury Park Film Initiative, a film-based nonprofit that promotes culture, education, and diversity.

Mubi’s theatrical releases in the U.S. this year include Paolo Sorrentino’s La Grazia, starring Toni Servillo, which won the Coppa Volpi Award for Best Actor in Venice, and Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother, Sister Brother, which won the Venice Golden Lion.
