Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for “Landman” Season 2 Episode 2, “Sins of the Father,” which premiered Sunday, Nov. 23 on Paramount+.
Last week’s season premiere of “Landman” was a packed episode. Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) learns that his mother has passed away. His son Cooper (Jacob Lofland) struck gold in oil. His daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) enrolled at TCU. His boss Cami (Demi Moore) gives a speech that terrifies the enemy. And his ex-wife Angela (Ali Larter) throws an expensive dinner at the wall. Now that the plot threads for season 2 are out, let’s move on to the second episode.
By the way, are these the craziest lyrics I’ve ever heard in a song on the Taylor Sheridan show? “If I had rabies, you’d be high on my list to bite.” Tyler Childers is great, but this one surprised me! Why is Cooper so upset? He has effectively won the lottery, and his father is a landowner in name only. Just ask for help with the paperwork and you’re all set. Also, as Ariana (Paulina Chavez) seems to be triggered, a life-changing week for your partner is only a few days away from being beneficial for you as well. Just roll with it…he’s fine! Wait, is she going to break up with him over this? This communication gap is a very solvable problem. All of Ariana’s points are valid, especially now that we have money, and the solution could be solved in about 45 minutes. OK, both TL (Sam Elliott) and Tommy spoke badly of the late matriarch, so I’m dying to know what she actually did to break up with them. I love how Tommy argues with the radio DJs as if they were sitting together in the truck. It’s also surprising that a picture of Angela in the middle of screaming and a creepy ringtone appear on Tommy’s phone every time he calls. Oh, this missing $400 million is going to be a problem. Unfortunately, the only person who knows where it is, Monty (Jon Hamm), dies. It felt great to see Rebecca (Kayla Wallace) put Nate (Colm Feore) in her place. Shut up, nerd, she can negotiate a deal to drill on the moon! It’s a great gag when Angela gets Nate’s name wrong multiple times. To be honest, he looks like Neil! Cooper is probably the stupidest human being on the planet. I get that you want to be in charge of your estate, but his dad is a land man! Let him see the contract! oh! Who would have thought that Tommy would have some pretty good advice about Ariana’s situation and how Cooper should listen to her? It would be nice to have a spin-off about the horndogs who were tipsy and farted in a nursing home. As for Angela and Ainsley vs. THHSC, I’m definitely on Team Norris. I got along well with the elderly…that’s great! When you need a lawyer, be as ruthless as Rebecca. As expected, the skeleton in Monty’s closet is going to be the one to haunt everyone this season. Are there any situations where Sheriff Walt (Mark Corry) doesn’t just do what Tommy tells him to do over FaceTime? “Yeah, that’s just me cleaning up my grief,” Thornton says, admirably deadpan. Another heartbreaking performance from Elliott. Call it Now: Give him some awards and get noticed! “I wasn’t raised to raise a son.” Damn, Tommy is getting introspective! Wow, Tommy’s backstory was a nightmare. The moment when Cooper tells Tommy he loves him and his best is enough…I burst into tears in an instant! Great emotional beat. I also love Thornton’s performance while Tommy tries not to cry. What are the chances that Cooper’s new business partner is Garino (Andy Garcia)?
Until next time, feel free to discuss whether Garino ultimately kidnaps Cooper and puts a bag over his head in the comments below.
