Showrunner Warren Wright exits, production pauses

More changes are afoot at CBS’ “CIA,” the latest offshoot of “FBI.” Showrunner Warren Leight, known for his work on multiple seasons of Law & Order: SVU, has stepped down from his role as showrunner.

Leight took over the role from David Hudgins in July. Sources told Variety that Mike Weiss, the current showrunner of “FBI,” is in talks to replace him while continuing to serve as showrunner and executive producer on “FBI.”

Production on “CIA” will be temporarily paused during the showrunner’s transition period, but the change is not expected to affect the premiere date, which is currently set for mid-season.

The hour-long crime drama stars Tom Ellis and “Chicago Med” alumnus Nick Gehlfuss as “two unlikely partners: a fast-talking, rule-breaking, artillery CIA case officer (Ellis) and a common-sense, experienced, intelligent FBI agent (Gellfuss) who believes in the rule of law.”

According to the official logline, “When this eccentric couple ends up working for the CIA’s New York station, they must learn to work together to investigate threatening cases and criminals on U.S. soil. And they discover that their differences may actually be their strength.”

Natalie Lines also stars in the drama, and casting is underway for a new police chief to fill the role previously played by Michael Michel. Michelle recently left the show.

“CIA” and “FBI” are a partnership between Universal Television, a division of Universal Studios Group, and Wolf Entertainment.
