Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone and Cole Escola join forces to give Miss Piggy the movie star treatment.
A movie about a whimsical diva doll is in early development at Disney, which owns the rights to the Muppets, according to a source familiar with the matter. The iconic character, created by Bonnie Erickson and Frank Oz in the ’70s, has never before been the subject of a feature film. Lawrence and Stone will serve as producers, and Escola, who won a Tony Award for his work on the Broadway hit “Oh Mary!,” will write the screenplay.
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to announce it, but I’m going to announce it anyway…Emma Stone and I are producing the Miss Piggy movie, and Cole is writing the script,” Lawrence revealed on the Las Culturistas podcast hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. When his co-host squealed with excitement and asked if longtime friends Stone and Lawrence would be co-starring in a movie, Lawrence teased, “I think so. If we don’t… we’re screwed.”
Lawrence also revealed that he is considering taking his talents to Broadway’s production of “Oh, Mary.” And I wanted to play the title character, Mary Todd Lincoln. This gonzo comedy is set days before Lincoln’s assassination and depicts the former first lady as an alcoholic wannabe cabaret star. (“It’s all a joke she’s on,” Ms. Lawrence said. “I felt like I could overplay it and get in on the joke.”) But after considering the grueling eight-show-a-week schedule on the Great White Way, she changed her mind.
Lawrence, who is currently promoting his new psychological drama Die My Love co-starring Robert Pattinson, said, “I don’t think I’m good at it…It’s all about my body and my voice,” adding, “The only time I ever wanted to do theater was when I wanted to do “Oh, Mary!”. They were like, “Eight shows a week and six weeks of rehearsals.” “Is there a daycare center over there?” I asked. That wouldn’t have worked. ”
