“Today” show host Dylan Dreyer spoke candidly about the breakup of his marriage to Brian Fichella, four months after announcing their separation.
“Everyone’s reasons for separation and divorce are different,” the TV personality said Wednesday on “Today with Jenna & Friends.”
“Something happened that we couldn’t repair, so we are now rebuilding our relationship and are no longer husband and wife.”
Mr Dreyer, 44, described it as “liberating” to be able to decide whether to continue trying to repair his marriage with Mr Fichera or to “accept the breakdown” and “take a new step”.
“Everything that’s broken, we accept that we’re broken, so we don’t blame them on you,” she continued.
“That’s why we’re living apart,” the TV host elaborated, sharing that she and Fichera had agreed to make up for their undisclosed marital breakdown and move forward as friends.
“Like friends, when you’re not married, you give yourself a little more grace,” Dryer says. “And I can be a better friend than my wife.”
Elsewhere, the meteorologist added that she and Fichera’s three sons, Calvin, Oliver and Rusty, had also discussed the separation.
“I asked Calvin, ‘What do you think family is?'” she said. “And he said, ‘Well, it’s a group of people who love each other.'”
“And I said, ‘That’s who we are, and that’s what we’ll always be to you, but mom and dad do better as friends than as a couple,'” Dreyer explained.
“And[Calvin]doesn’t care about titles. He doesn’t care what we are officially. They don’t care about anybody. They’re surrounded by love every day.”
Ms. Dreyer said her and Fichera’s co-parenting relationship included Fichera taking the children to school and attending dinners.
The ex-lovers plan to celebrate Thanksgiving together later this month.
“I have three boys,” Dryer said. “I want a father in their life. They need it. They need the strength of both a father and a mother. We are providing that to them in the best way possible.”
In July, Dryer confirmed on Instagram that she and the photographer had split after 13 years of marriage.
At the time, she subtly hinted at trouble in paradise after opting out of wearing a wedding ring on the “Today” show.
