One way we know the new Alex Rodriguez documentary is objective is that it was directed by a huge Red Sox fan.
A source at the premiere of HBO Max’s new three-part doc, Alex vs. ARod, told Page Six that the project’s co-director Gotham Chopra is “a huge Red Sox fan, so he hates the Yankees and always hated A-Rod. But Alex trusted him with this doc.”
Rodriguez, 50, of course played 12 seasons with the Bronx Bombers.
Another guest said Rodriguez beat out the Boston-born coach.
The film was produced by Religion of Sports, a company co-founded by Mr. Chopra (son of New Age mastermind Deepak Chopra) and NFL greats-turned-casters Tom Brady and Michael Strahan.
In addition to Brady and Strahan, guests at the premiere included former Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia and his wife Amber, team announcers Michael Kay and Sujin Waldman, A-Rod’s Minnesota Timberwolves business partner Marc Rohr, Kevin Durant’s longtime agent Rich Kleiman, and Rodriguez’s entire family.
During a Q&A at a screening in New York City, the former third baseman was asked a “touchy-feely” question and heard a humorous moment in which he responded, “I’m in this doc, but you shouldn’t listen to me for mental health advice, please, please.”
“It was very interesting,” Spy said.
“Warts and All,” released Nov. 6 and co-directed by Eric LeDrew, has been hailed as a vivid and authentic portrayal of a polarizing baseball legend.
I’m told that HBO executives who attended the DGA Theater debut were enthused, saying, “This is one of the best docs they’ve ever made.”
“This is a side of Alex that we’ve never seen,” said a friend of this difficult project.
