Tonight’s Vogue World: Hollywood event is intentionally set in Tinseltown and features a star-studded appearance.
And Oscar winner Nicole Kidman opened the night’s show looking as glamorous as ever with bouncy brushed-out curls and bright red lips, wearing a Chanel black draped satin bustier dress embellished with a black satin camilla by the brand’s new artistic director Mathieu Blazy.
In a direct homage to Rita Hayworth, one of Old Hollywood’s most famous redheads, Kidman’s outfit is reminiscent of the black satin dress and opera gloves worn by Hayworth in the 1946 film Gilda, where she performed an impromptu striptease while singing “Put Me Down.”
But Blazey added her own twist to the look, using the French house’s signature Camilla flower. The look was accessorized with a Chanel Fine Jewelry Diamant Evanescent necklace composed of hundreds of brilliant-cut diamonds.
Kidman opened the evening’s festivities with a prerecorded interpretation of Hayworth’s performance, shot in black and white under vintage studio lights. Backup dancers in tuxedos helped her zip up her form-fitting costume before “Moulin Rouge.” The actress stepped onto the runway that became Paramount’s property to be “directed” by frequent collaborator and fellow Australian Baz Luhrmann.
The original costume, designed by Columbia Pictures’ Jean Louis, was one of many memorable costumes created for Hayworth throughout their nine-film partnership. It was last sold at auction in 2009, with labels sewn into the inside that read “Owned by Columbia Pictures” and “Rita Hayworth.”
The “Blame Me” scene has been imitated countless times on screen, from the glamorous red-headed cartoon Jessica Rabbit in 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit to the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall.
It was a fitting way for the single Australian actress, who had just split from her husband of 19 years, Keith Urban, to kick off a night of tributes to some of Hollywood’s most celebrated costume designers, past and present. It’s also a fitting choice for Kidman, who recently reprized her role as a Chanel ambassador, last serving as the face of the French fashion house’s iconic No. 5 fragrance in 2005.
Following similar events in New York and Paris, the latest edition of Vogue World spotlights the relationship between film and fashion, focusing on the most stylish characters in film history. Notably, Kendall Jenner is wearing Kidman’s glittering corset and top hat in Moulin Rouge! The runway portion of the show will open in LA.
Guests stepped out in style in a parade of stunning movie costumes alongside a stunning fashion collection hand-picked by Vogue magazine’s Anna Wintour and her team. They were also treated to musical performances by Doja Cat and Gracie Abrams.
The gala, held on the Paramount Pictures Studio lot, will feature the work of Hollywood’s top costume designers, including Ruth E. Carter (Black Panther), Katherine Martin (Moulin Rouge!), Arianne Phillips (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Sandy Powell (Shakespeare in Love).
Proceeds from this event will be donated to the Entertainment Community Foundation, with a special focus on supporting costume professionals affected by the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year.
