Snoop Dogg has partnered with GLAAD to support Spirit Day, an anti-bullying initiative for LGBTQ+ youth. As part of the campaign, the rapper had a special Spirit Day conversation with “The Voice” alum Jeremy Beroat, a member of the NBC reality series Team Snoop and member of the LGBTQ+ community. The two talked about their recent collaboration on Snoop’s new song “Love Is Love,” which is included in his children’s animated YouTube series “Doggyland.”
“It’s great that kids can have parents from all walks of life and be shown love and be taught what love is…To be able to have parents from all walks of life, whether it’s two dads, two moms, whatever it is, love is the key,” Snoop said during the conversation.
In the children’s show, Beroate voices a pup named Zippy who joins the Doggyland puppies in singing “Love Is Love,” a song celebrating the love shared between families. Meanwhile, Snoop provides the voice of Bow Wizzle, one of the show’s main characters.
“We have different parents/No one is the same/But one thing’s for sure: our love will never change,” the puppies sing, as several same-sex couples appear on screen. “Families are special / They’re so unique / Everyone has a purpose beyond what meets the eye / We love our parents / We love you so much.”
“At the end of the day, it’s all about love, and that’s what we teach kids on ‘Love Is Love,'” Snoop said in a statement. Partnering with GLAAD on Spirit Day felt like the right thing to do. Because spreading love and respect to everyone is what a real gangsta does. We are showing the next generation that kindness is cool, inclusion is powerful, and love always wins. ”
Snoop’s partnership with GLAAD for his new song “Love Is Love” comes months after Snoop made controversial comments about the Pixar film “Lightyear.”
On an August episode of his “It’s Giving” podcast, Snoop Dogg said he felt “afraid” to take his grandchildren to the movies after watching the 2022 “Toy Story” spinoff “Lightyear.” The film includes Disney and Pixar’s first same-sex kiss, as well as scenes of two women raising a child.
“They were like, ‘She had a baby with another woman,'” Snoop recalled. “Well, my grandson says in the middle of the movie, ‘Daddy Snoop? How did you have a child with a woman? She’s a woman!'”
Snoop remembers thinking, “Damn, I’m not here to do this shit. I’m just here to watch a shitty movie.”
“He recalled his grandson coming up to him and saying, ‘I just told you that she and she are having a baby. They’re both women. How do you have a baby?’
“It was a mess. It’s like I’m scared to go to the movies,” Snoop added at the time. “Everyone just throws me in the middle of some shit with no answers…and I go around in circles. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?'” These are kids. Do we have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. There is no answer. ”
In a recent conversation with Beroate, Snoop explained that “Love Is Love” “teaches you about being a parent. Through song, dance, and melody, it teaches kids and the world what they’re going through in a beautiful way. And it’s just trying to bring more understanding and clarity to how we live and how we live. And I felt like this music was a beautiful bridge of understanding.”
He continued: “This is a program that we’ve been running for years, and kids are involved, and these are the questions they have. So now we hope we can answer those questions and help them live happy lives and understand that love is love.”
