Meet the real kids from the “9-1-1” cast

Angela Bassett’s two children

9-1-1 featured Bassett’s character, Sgt. Athena Grant is the mother of daughter May and son Harry with ex-husband Michael, but in real life she also has two children with husband Courtney B. Vance.

After seven years of IVF, the couple gave birth to fraternal twins Bronwyn Golden and Slater Josiah via surrogate on January 27, 2006.

Bassett told Vulture in 2019 that Bronwyn had a tendency to imitate her mother from an early age.

“I’m just speaking from my own experience, but from an early age, my daughter always looked to me for examples of what to do and how to be,” the Black Panther star said.

she continued. “I have a twin, and if I were to say to her brother, ‘Slater, put that down. Slater, don’t stand on that. Slater—’ she would become a little copy of me. If he tried to do something, she’d say, ‘Slater, put that down! Slater, don’t stand on that!'” She was my little copycat! ”

Although Bassett and Vance have both had successful acting careers, she said in 2021 that she gently encourages her teens to turn to music, especially after the release of the movie Soul.

“They both play piano, they both rap, they play guitar, so I have a little musical interest in them that I insist on,” she told E! On the 2021 Golden Globe Awards red carpet.

She added, “But I thought they wouldn’t be interested because it’s jazz…but to my surprise they liked it. They got a lot of themes and ideas from it and really appreciated it.”

Slater released his first album, Journey 2 Forever, in 2021, followed by an EP titled Holeheart the following year.

Jennifer Love Hewitt’s three children

Hewitt’s Madi Hun balances motherhood with her role as a 9-1-1 dispatcher in the series. In real life, she is the mother of three children with husband Brian Hallisay.

The couple’s first child, daughter Autumn James, was born on November 26, 2013. Less than two years later, their son Atticus James was born on June 24, 2015.

Their son Aidan James was born in September 2021. During Hewitt’s real-life pregnancy, she was also pregnant on screen.

Hewitt and Hallisay exclusively revealed to PEOPLE that they were expecting their third child in May 2021, one month after Maddie and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) became parents for the first time on September 1, season 4.

The actress explained that she was “proud” of herself for keeping her pregnancy a secret while simulating Maddie’s “intense” labor and birth.

“Now that my kids are a little older, it reminded me of being back in that space again, and[co-star Kenneth Choi]was like, ‘See? We pretended to be pregnant and I got pregnant!’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I think so,'” she said. “The craziest, most surreal moment was when I was pregnant and had to give birth. It was so interesting.”

After Aidan’s arrival, Hewitt, who had a personal connection with her, returned to the series and Maddie’s journey into postnatal depression was explored.

“I was really impressed and excited that the show decided to delve into postpartum depression,” she said in an exclusive sneak video. “I think that’s very important.”

She continued, “Personally, I had by far the worst postpartum experience after this pregnancy. So being able to come back so soon after that and be able to tell Maddie the truth was very cathartic for me, and I’m so glad I was able to express that for all the women out there.”

Hewitt and Hallisay have kept their children out of the spotlight for years, but they shared a glimpse of their faces for the first time on the cover of their 2024 memoir, Inheriting Magic.

Ryan Guzman’s two children

Before becoming a real-life father of his own two children, Ryan Guzman played an on-screen parent as Eddie Diaz on 9-1-1.

“Playing a father before he was a father was incredible,” he told PEOPLE in March 2024.

She added, “And then there’s this moment where I’m always walking my son to school. I could do that all day. Every take brought me to tears because I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to walk my son around.”

Guzman and his then-fiancée Christy Ane gave birth to son Mateo on January 24, 2019, after announcing their pregnancy in September 2018.

After keeping the entire pregnancy a secret, the couple welcomed their second child, daughter Genevieve “Gigi” Valentina, on January 7, 2021.

“…Rye and I decided to be a little selfish this time and continue this journey just the two of us. We’re so glad we did. It was so special,” the mother of two captioned a since-deleted Instagram post.

The couple separated in 2023 after five years of dating.

Captain Bobby Nash left behind his wife Athena Grant and stepchildren May and Harry after his shocking death during Season 8 of 9-1-1. In real life, Klaus is the father of a son.

Klaus and his then-girlfriend Christine King welcomed Roman on November 20, 2001.

Although the former couple has largely kept Roman out of the spotlight, Klaus spoke to TV Guide in 2015 about balancing on-screen work and being a parent in real life.

“Thanks to my parents, I was able to spend time with him every week, but in the spring I was given a significant amount of time as an assistant coach for his baseball team. And because of the program, I became more involved with him,” he said.

Krauss added, “Although I have a strong desire to do more as an actor, I try to find a balance between my professional life and my actual parenting life, and this show has provided that for me.”

Being on the set of Parenthood also bonded him and co-star Lauren Graham. Although their relationship ended 11 years later in 2021, the Gilmore Girls star wrote about Roman in her 2022 book Have I Told You This Already? A story that I don’t want to remember after breaking up with Klaus.

“Although I have never been a mother, I have long loved the children who lived in my home,” Graham wrote in her book, adding that she hopes Roman “will be a part of the rest of my life.”
