Do you need to know the bride and groom well to attend Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding?
That’s the big question this week, as fans, media and the social set in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville speculate on which lucky 1,000 people will be invited to the celebrity wedding of the decade this Friday night at Madison Square Garden.
The slow news week leading up to the Fourth of July holiday has been filled with breathless reports that billionaire diva Swift is marrying Kansas City tight end Kelsey, ending a long and fruitful era as a single woman. According to reports, a small rehearsal dinner will be held on Thursday night (with only 400 attendees!). According to TMZ, a secret official wedding will take place somewhere in Manhattan on Friday, and later that night, MSG will host a historic grand ceremony complete with castle sets and musical performances.
“A 1,000-person wedding is not a guest list, it’s a Rolodex,” one entertainment mogul says cautiously. So who made the cut?
For Hollywood’s core, bragging rights go to Disney’s upper echelons. According to multiple sources, some executives have won golden tickets. This includes Bob Iger, the company’s former CEO and current senior advisor. David Greenbaum, Head of Disney Live Action Films and 20th Century Studios. and Dana Walden, Disney’s president and chief creative officer. That’s not surprising, considering Disney has invested a lot of money into Swift in recent years. For example, they are spending millions to acquire the streaming rights to her concert film, “The Elas Tour.” Before Greenbaum climbed onto the Disney mothership, he and Swift became close while developing her upcoming directorial debut at Searchlight Pictures. Disney is also certain to spend heavily on this year’s Oscar campaign for Swift’s original songs featured in the studio’s “Toy Story 5.” Good luck to these brave souls. They will be faced with countless questions about this event at premieres and previews for the rest of their lives.
The other person who filed the lawsuit is Adam Aaron, CEO of AMC Theaters. Again, he’s easy. Swift worked directly with Aaron and his team to create the highest-grossing concert film of all time with 2023’s Taylor Swift: The Elus Tour, which grossed $267 million worldwide before moving to Disney+. Legendary director Steven Spielberg has also been invited, two people familiar with the matter said. The “Disclosure Day” conductor helped induct Swift into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June.
Swift’s career has reached heights beyond the wildest dreams of country stars, but she hasn’t forgotten her roots. Miranda Lambert, Kane Brown, Little Big Town, Kelsea Ballerini and Maren Morris all made the list. Insiders said it could also reveal some of the biggest names in the music industry, from the names of executives to top producers. Republic Records founders Monte and Avery Lipman. Louis Messina, Swift’s longtime tour promoter; Troy Tomlinson of UMPG. and hitmakers Jack Antonoff, Max Martin, Shellback, and Aaron Dessner. We don’t expect Scooter Braun to show up, but if you see him around MSG, say hi on your way to the New Jersey Transit tunnel.
Before we get into the superstar attendees, it’s important to note that wedding security protocols, nondisclosure agreements, and the circus of fans and police about to storm New York City have sent celebrities and industry insiders into a dizzying panic.
According to more than a dozen people interviewed by Variety, big stars, executives and musicians are “flying blind” with minimal details about the wedding theme and dress code. Many were said to have arrived in New York City by the morning of July 3 and are awaiting further details, three people familiar with the matter said. Some daring brands have asked their stylists to pull evening looks from the showrooms of major designers, with no guidance on the mood of the event.
A fashion spokesperson in charge of VIP services for multiple luxury brands told Variety that there were “many requests for talent to attend.” “No one has said whose wedding they will be attending, but everyone knows.”
One guest had to pay an excessive fee to book the hair and makeup team of her choice for 24 hours before and after her wedding, otherwise losing her reservation to another celebrity in the know.
“It’s a really fun shitty show,” Guest told Variety.
Swift’s famous friends (referred to as her “squad” in a past life) are easy to identify and easily accomplished when it comes to attendance. Think Haim, the Hadid sisters, Selena Gomez, Sabrina Carpenter, Ed Sheeran and Ice Spice. “The Queen’s Gambit” actress Anya Taylor-Joy will also appear. While Beyoncé and Jay-Z have almost certainly received invitations, the Carters have been very selective about their public appearances in recent years. “Bridgerton” star Phoebe Dynevor and her fiancé, actor/producer Cameron Fuller, earned an invite with a grid full of Easter eggs that would make any Swiftie flip. For example, invited guest Ellen Pompeo is an iconic character from Grey’s Anatomy and the namesake of one of Swift’s cats (which also leads us to believe Mariska Hargitay will appear, given Swift’s long-standing love of Law & Order: SVU).
We also need to talk about who won’t go. Harry Styles, the singer’s short-lived ex-boyfriend who is said to have inspired songs in her catalog including “Out of the Woods,” received an invitation. Unfortunately, Styles is currently on tour and will not be able to attend MSG, sources said. However, his own fiancée Zoe Kravitz will also be in attendance. The actor and director is a longtime friend of Swift and is credited as a songwriter on her hit song “Lavender Haze.” The world will be watching with bated breath to see if Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds will climb the MSG ladder. Many have speculated that Lively and Swift had a falling out over Blake Lively’s heated legal battle with Justin Baldoni, whom Swift directed. Swift was brutally dragged into court proceedings when Baldoni accused Lively of using Lively to blackmail her during filming. If Lively is in attendance, it might be best to avoid the pomp and styling reminiscent of Khaleesi.
Witnessing Swift and Kelce’s wedding isn’t without its risks. All official digital invitations included a guest name watermark and were bundled with an NDA. Sources wouldn’t say how much the parties would be liable for if wedding details were leaked, but here’s some perspective: For simple appearances, such as presenting at an awards ceremony, stars like Beyoncé have been known to have a $1 million penalty on their NDAs if their attendance is revealed in advance. And it’s for red carpet appearances, not for celebrity weddings that could overshadow America’s 250th birthday on July 4th.
There are also optical issues. In a world torn apart by war, inflation, soaring gas prices and political instability, such extravaganzas are not well received. Just ask Jeff and Lauren Bezos, whose June 2025 wedding in Venice became a symbol of oligarchic excess. Despite her fans’ excitement about the marriage, the wedding will shut down small businesses in midtown Manhattan and drain the NYPD’s resources, as an intense heat wave threatens to cripple the city’s power grid during the World Cup. What could go wrong? But Swift is smart. On Thursday morning, she announced $26 million in charitable donations to organizations across New York City, including food banks and the SPCA.
There’s no doubt that Friday will be a historic night, bringing together the worlds of celebrity, music, sports, media and fashion in a way that only this power couple can. But, as one guest hilariously complained, they do miss weekends in the Hamptons.
“Who the hell is going to be in Manhattan on the Fourth of July?” they murmured. “Wasn’t this a destination wedding?”
