Fair is fair, and Cooper has talked quite a bit about herself and her relationship with her current husband, Matt Kaplan. The two first met in 2020, when Zoom was the norm. The couple got engaged three years later and tied the knot in Mexico in 2024. In May 2026, she announced that she was pregnant with her first child.
Here’s everything you need to know about Kaplan. Much of it comes from Cooper himself.
Who is Alex Cooper’s husband Matt Kaplan?
Successful CEOs attended Columbia University. During his school days, he had two passions: soccer and movies. While attending Columbia University, he played quarterback for the Columbia Lions team. He said on the podcast The Backlot that playing film and studying were “the only two things I did for fun.”
He took classes in screenwriting and directing, and while he claims he was “never that good at it,” he decided he was good at “evaluating material.”
Kaplan was right about that. He worked as an assistant at Lionsgate and then at Blumhouse. But his big break came at Awesomeness Films, where he produced To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. The work became a hit series on Netflix, and he eventually served as president of the company. He currently runs Ace Entertainment.
If that wasn’t enough, Kaplan and Cooper started their own media company called Unwell, which focuses on Gen Z audiences. Podcasters Madeline Argy and Owen Seale have signed with their agency.
How did Cooper and Kaplan meet?
In August 2020, Cooper introduced “Mr. Sexy Zoomman” on his podcast and shared his experience on their first date after meeting through a conferencing app.
“I got in the car and we made eye contact,” Cooper told podcast listeners. “People who meet right away feel as if they’ve known each other for a long time, right? We hit it off right away and felt like we were going to get along really well.”
Especially when she announced that she officially had a boyfriend six months later, fans speculated about his real identity. She did not admit her boyfriend was Kaplan until April 2023.
When did they get engaged?
Kaplan proposed to Cooper in March 2023 with a 5-carat vintage oval-cut diamond by jewelry designer Jenna Blake. Cooper thought he was hosting a photo shoot at his home. While she was out getting ready, Kaplan used the time to decorate the house and prepare a treasure hunt to lead her to the ring. She found him outside with their two dogs, who were both wearing bow ties for the day.
“He got down on one knee and said, ‘You are my soulmate, the love of my life. You make me a better man. Please do me the honor of marrying me,'” she told W Magazine. “I love Blackout. I think I said yes at first. It was so surreal.”
The podcast host said she wasn’t sure if she wanted to get married, but Kaplan was open to it. However, as the relationship progressed, she felt ready to propose.
“He was glowing because he accepted that we might not get married,” she explained. “I didn’t grow up imagining weddings. I don’t have a Pinterest board of flowers or dresses. I definitely want to get married next year.”
After the proposal, the couple gathered with friends and family to celebrate at the Four Seasons in Los Angeles.
“It was truly the most memorable, loving experience of my life. And it was perfect, and I will remember it forever,” she said.
What else does Cooper say about Kaplan?
As a man who works behind the scenes, Kaplan clearly prefers to remain private, even though he has a wife with whom he shares a lot about his life. Cooper told W: “Matt is very private, but he also loves the Daddy Gang. Every week he says, ‘How’s the episode? Do they like it?'” Cooper told W.
“When I started this show, I was very open about everything, sometimes to the detriment of my personal life. If something happened the night before, I would run into the studio and talk about it. I didn’t even allow myself to process things.”
But she also teased the idea that he might appear on her podcast.
“Never say never, because I never expected him to announce who he was or post a picture of us,” she said. “And now I’m here.”
When did Cooper and Kaplan get married?
In February 2024, the couple held a “practice ceremony,” a shot of which she shared on Instagram.
“Practicing for the big day 🥺❤️,” Cooper wrote in the caption. “Last night we had a little pre-wedding celebration with Matt’s 100 year old grandma. Unfortunately she won’t be able to come to our wedding so we wanted to make her feel special and feel like she’s a part of everything ❤️ Sobbing I love you grandma. The dad gang loves you too, Legend (yes, she’s wearing Chd sweats).”
Although the couple didn’t reveal the date of their “real” wedding, she did reveal details about how they wanted to celebrate on an episode of Call Her Daddy. She said, “I don’t want our wedding to be a place for public consumption. I don’t want my Uncle Marty on a retirement trip snorkeling in the background with a bulging belly and a piña colada.”
She continued, “It’s very important to me that Matt and I make this day our own. I’d rather everyone at the wedding have the worst time, so Matt and I can be happy.”
According to Vogue, the wedding weekend took place on April 4, 2024 in Mexico’s Riviera Maya.
“It was everything we wanted,” Cooper told the magazine. “It’s emotional and heartfelt and tailored exactly how we always envisioned it.”
“There was a large antique wooden door that opened out onto the courtyard, so rather than walk past the guests down the aisle, I decided to walk toward it so that the door would open and everyone seated would be facing me,” she continued. “Runway, so to speak! It was a perfect moment because as soon as I came out, all I saw was Matt. It was a very dramatic moment with the dress showing, but it was also a very beautiful euphoric moment between the two of us.”
Although the “Call Her Daddy” host is used to revealing her personal life to fans, she admitted that the true details of her relationship with Kaplan are usually kept private.
“My life is pretty public, but Matt and I’s real close bond and connection is actually kept pretty private,” Cooper said.
When reading the couple’s vows, Cooper told Vogue: “It was emotional. As you can see in almost every photo, there wasn’t a dry eye. We’ll never forget that moment.”
Cooper’s younger brother, Grant, officiated at the ceremony.
“He’s been so helpful to me throughout my life. He and Matt have developed such a great bond,” Cooper said. “My brother has done a great job of telling the story of our relationship so beautifully.”
Cooper also said he decided to walk alone instead of having his father walk him down the aisle.
“When I started planning my wedding, I really rejected the concept of being taken by one man and handed off to another,” she said. “Just to be clear, I have a great relationship with my dad and my parents, but it was so much more than that. For me personally, I’ve never liked that tradition. It’s old and outdated. My mom walked her down the aisle herself, too. I think in a way, we’re creating our own traditions for the women in our family.”
This isn’t the only wedding tradition that Cooper and Kaplan have decided not to participate in.
“Matt and I both have two left feet, so we decided to forego the first dance and do it our way again…we did a first shot with all the guests instead,” she revealed.
The couple adopted dogs Henry and Bruce as ring bearers.
“Some people may recognize them as Goldendoodles, but we consider them our children,” Cooper joked. “They were ring bearers. They each had our rings on their collars, and when my brother asked for them, they just came in through the double doors and ran down the aisle. It was perfect.”
All in all, it was the fairytale wedding of her dreams.
“Matt and I were both very intentional about spending the weekend with each other and our friends and family, and that’s exactly what we did. There’s not a detail or moment that we don’t remember, and I will forever cherish this celebration of our love,” she concluded.
Who else are Kaplan and Cooper romantically involved with?
Kaplan was previously married to Australian actress Claire Holt, known for her role on The Originals, but they divorced in 2016 after less than a year of marriage. He also dated Ashley Olsen for three years. They broke up in 2004.
Do Cooper and Kaplan have children?
On the June 4, 2025 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Cooper detailed her family plans and why she and Kaplan aren’t ready to have children just yet.
The couple originally planned to start having children immediately after their wedding. Cooper explained, “We started planning a home renovation to build a nursery and a nursery upstairs…We told our families. Our date night was about talking about how excited we were to see each other become parents.”
But after coming off birth control, Cooper faced unexpected health challenges. “I started experiencing extreme dizziness and dizziness,” she revealed. “There were times when I felt like I was going to pass out when I was being interviewed. I was always very emotional and it was frustrating.”
The physical symptoms caused Cooper to reevaluate his timing. “I wasn’t ready,” she said. “While this whole thing has been shitty, my career has never been busier and never been this big. When I inevitably got pregnant, I had to slow down.”
Kaplan was supportive throughout this process. “I know he will be the most amazing father to our baby,” Cooper said. “But I realized I needed a little more time to live before I entered the next beautiful chapter of my life.”
They announced that they are planning to give birth in the spring of 2026. On May 17, Cooper posted a photo of herself and Kaplan on Instagram, showing off her pregnancy. In the photo, he was sitting on a wooden porch chair, admiring the gorgeous view. Cooper sat on the arm of her chair, smiling at him lovingly at first, then laughing as he stroked her thigh. She is wearing a long-sleeved cropped shirt and matching white pants.
“Our family 🤍,” she wrote in the caption.
Did Cooper and Kaplan share photos from when they were together in 2025?
Cooper posted several snaps of the two together over the summer.
In June 2025, she shared photos from a trip to Greece with Kaplan and her friends, including one taken together at Skorpios Beach on Mykonos. She captioned the merry-go-round, “Okay, I get the Scorpio hype.”
The next day, Cooper posted another carousel of photos of them kissing. She simply wrote “<333".
Later that summer, Cooper shared a glimpse of his downtime at home at August’s Carousel, including a photo of the couple playing beer pong with other dogs. She captioned the post, “Touching the grass.”
