Sony has released the trailer for the new horror movie “Resident Evil.” Based on Capcom’s hit horror video game, Resident Evil is co-written and directed by Shay Hatten and Weapons director Zack Creger.
The film does not feature established characters from the Resident Evil universe, such as Leon S. Kennedy or Jill Valentine, as director Creger aimed to create a new and original story. The plot introduces a new protagonist in the midst of an outbreak in Raccoon City: a delivery man delivering packages.
The original “Resident Evil” was released as a PlayStation game in 1994, but has since been made available on several different consoles. There have been more than a dozen sequels and remakes of the game, including this year’s Resident Evil Requiem.
There have been six Resident Evil films so far, starting with Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez’s 2002 film. Jovovich went on to direct Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2017). In 2021, director Johannes Roberts took on the role of writer and director for a reboot of the series, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. In total, the series has grossed more than $1.2 billion at the global box office.
The latest Resident Evil movie is produced and co-financed by Constantine Film. Robert Kruzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee, Miri Yun, and PlayStation Productions also serve as producers.
Cregger’s credits as a writer and director include “Miss March,” “Drug War” (both co-starring Trevor Moore), “The Barbarian,” and last year’s “Weapons.”
“Resident Evil” will be released in theaters on September 18th. Check out the trailer below.
