Ahead of its world premiere in Cannes, Oscar-nominated director Reed Van Dyke’s feature debut Tsugunai has been joined for international sales by The Veterans. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent are jointly handling U.S. rights.
The film, selected by Directors’ Fortnight as the only American feature in competition, stars Oscar winner Kenneth Branagh (Dunkirk, The Devil Wears Prada 2), Boyd Holbrook (Completely Unknown, Logan), Hiam Abbas (Succession, Ramy) and newcomer Guido.
Written and directed by Van Dyke and inspired by Dexter Filkins’ 2012 New Yorker article, “Atonement” is set in the early days of the Iraq War, when a U.S. Marine’s split-second decision during a firefight devastates an Iraqi family. Years later, with the help of a journalist, he seeks reconciliation with the surviving woman and her family.
Van Dyke previously directed the Oscar-nominated short film “DeKalb Elementary.”
Tim and Trevor White are producing on behalf of Star Thrower Entertainment. Van Dyk is also producing with Redline Entertainment’s David Wulf and Talon Entertainment’s Steven Demmler. Wayne L. Rogers will serve as executive producer.
Other films currently on Veterans’ schedule include James Gray’s Paper Tigers, starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller, and Diamonds, directed by and starring Andy Garcia, both of which premiered at Cannes. Other titles include “Mutiny,” directed by Jean-François Richet and starring Jason Statham. Director Takashi Miike’s next film starring Charlie XCX and Millie Alcock is currently in production.
