FX has given a series order to “Very Young Frankenstein.”
The project was first announced in 2025 with a pilot order. Exact plot details are still being kept under wraps, other than the fact that it takes inspiration from Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder’s classic comedy Young Frankenstein. As previously reported, the show stars Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, and Spencer House. Nicky Crawford, Kumail Nanjiani, and Cary Elwes also starred in the pilot.
Very Young Frankenstein is the work of screenwriter Stephanie Robinson, who also serves as executive producer along with Taika Waititi and Garrett Basch. All three are alums of FX’s hit comedy series “What We Do in the Shadows.” Waititi also directed the pilot. Brooks, who co-wrote and directed the film, will serve as executive producer, with Kevin Salter and Michael Gruskopf also serving as executive producers. Salter was Brooks’ producing partner, and Gruskopf produced the original film. TV number 20 is the studio.
“‘Very Young Frankenstein’ combines inspiration from the fan-favorite film with the inventive, irreverent spirit that has defined FX comedy for years, creating a completely original take on the classic story,” said Nick Glad, president of FX Entertainment. “In the hands of FX veterans Stephanie, Taika and Garrett, and the iconic Mel Brooks, we’re sure our fans will have as much fun watching this series as we have making it.”
Young Frankenstein premiered in 1974 and was loved by critics and audiences alike. It is widely cited as one of the funniest American films ever made. Wilder starred as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (or Fronken Steen), Victor Frankenstein’s grandson. When Frederick inherits his grandfather’s property in Transylvania, he finds himself drawn to continuing his predecessor’s work of raising the dead.
The cast also included Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn, Peter Boyle, and Kenneth Mars. Gene Hackman also appears briefly in the film as a blind man who encounters Frankenstein’s monster.
