Serkamon has accepted the role of sales agent for the tragicomedy “Black Money in the Midnight Sun”, which will have its world premiere in the Crystal Globe Competition section of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
A Bulgarian-Greek co-production directed by Kristina Grozeva and Petar Varchanov, the screenplay was written by Grozeva, Varchanov, and Decho Tararezhkov.
Over the years, Marina, a 65-year-old obstetric nurse, and her husband Gosha, a 68-year-old railway dispatcher, have collected small bribes to pay for their dream trip to St. Petersburg for the Midnight Sun Festival. Their dreams, and illusions of control, are shattered when Russia invades Ukraine and the travel agency disappears, along with their savings. When Gosha is beaten and hospitalized while trying to get the money back, a long-buried betrayal comes to the surface and the couple is forced to confront the lies their lives have been built on.
“Kristina Grozeva and Petar Varchanov have created a bold and unsettling film, rooted in a keen sense of place, character and social tension, where the line between good and evil becomes increasingly fragile. We have long admired their unique cinematic voices and are proud to accompany them on this powerful new work as it begins its international journey,” said Sébastien Chenault of Cercamon.
Grozeva and Petar Varchanov said: “Returning to Karlovy Vary seven years after ‘The Father’ feels very special for us, especially as we are once again surrounded by the same producers and close collaborators from Gural Films.”
“We are also very excited to have Cerkamon be a part of the journey of Black Money, as we believe this deeply personal tragedy of corruption and moral compromise will resonate strongly with audiences today.”
Producers are Konstantina Stavrianou, Irini Vougioukarou, Grozeva and Varchanov of Abraxas Films, and co-producers are Gular Films, Bulgarian National Television, Greek Broadcasting Corporation ERT, and Hellenic Film Center. The film is supported by the Bulgarian National Film Center and Eurimage.
